Gonzaga Hwy Update
This from a friend in San Felipe:
The road to Gonzaga Bay is now paved 2 miles south of Gonzaga and open . New military check point almost done . Looks the same as the one north of San
Felipe. Alfonsina's packed lots of people . Rooms are now $75 weekdays and $100 weekends and $125 holidays . Also building more rooms on the left side
as you go in .

So that big bridge that their building, exactly what is going to link? It seems kind of big for lil Gonzaga bay.

The bridge just north of Papa Fernandez' road?
It simple goes over Arroyo Alfredo providing all weather communication.

these are the new rooms that face bahia willard, theyre above a huge garage you can secure your boat,bikes, whatever you want locked up.

Yeah, a big one. I tried to reach it to take a pic, but i couldnt. Theres a paved road to it but was closed to traffic last may.

Just like any place they are working on the highway, just continue on the dirt detour road... and you would have seen it. It has been open to traffic
for a few months now... and the pavement as reported by Wayno to TW and other of us on his email now extends and can be driven for 2 miles south of
the Gonzaga Pemex.
The next big bridge they will likely build is over Arroyo Santa Maria, about 5 miles south of the Pemex.

Yeah we tried to get to the bridge thru the dirt roads, but at one point, the dirt road broke into two,so we didnt know which one to follow, so we
went back and tried to get into the paved road that was closed, thru a little dirt gap, but i got stuck on a small enbankment, eventhough i was
driving a jeep patriot. Lol. Luckily for us, help came soon from a couple of american couples who help us get unstuck our little jeep. After that we
went back immediately to SF. Lol

Headed that way fri or mon. But I certainly won't pay that kinda price for Alfonsina's. I'll look at San Felipe or other options.

it may sound kinda pricey but don't forget, you can get your picture taken with antonio and don't forget
one of your taco!

Egads...a military checkpoint near Gonzaga Bay similar to the one north of San Felipe??????? Oh...say it isn't so?
(Then again, there is the one between Maneadero and Santo Tomas and it is still just a shell...or was?).

Even the palapas have seen a rental increase....we stayed there 10 days ago.....$10/night for an open palapa and $25 for an enclosed one. It was a
Friday night and the store and Alfonsino's restaurant were packed....to say the least....not a great review on the food/service....Eso si que es.....

Funny comment about the map and GPS... but these once remote places (including the Seven Sisters) have all been on maps and GPS lists since either
were made for Baja travelers.
The places remain remote and unspoiled, UNTIL a highway (paved or graded dirt) is built to them... but specially when pavement arrives. It is good
roads that spoil the remote places in Baja for those of us who go there for that kind of experience.
Take up you complaining with the Mexican government. It is what it is and the good 'ol days are just that... I vividly remember Gonzaga Bay and how it
looked over the many years I have gone there and used the road via Puertecitos: 1965, 1967, 1974, 1975, 1979, 1983, 1986, 1999, and almost annually
from 2001-2012... my Tacoma years

Since I most of my time in Baja, I appreciate the infrastructure improvements.
and I find there are still more unexplored areas than those that are "civilized".
I would put up some pictures of this beloved road from 1959, but I find that some people borrow them and reuse them as their own and as with most
family photos, they are personal.

That's progress.....there will always be the side doubletrack south of Gonzaga for the folks who like it rough....

Time moves on... I remember the road on the Pacific side prior to being paved. Now we take it for granted...or even complain about a few potholes.
and it opened up a lot of areas for off-road exploration. I suspect the same will happen here and others will take it for granted in the years to
come.

man I love the new pavement, get the rest done! I don't doubt that you "frequent yearly visitors" have a soft spot for that old POS road, but traveling that thing weekly, leaving numerous parts of numerous
vehicles scattered along the way, the romance slips away.
and for you youngsters that were born too late to taste the wild side of baja, listen, I'd way rather have my youth than a bunch of memories of "the
good ol' days" but thats just me.
