A future Baja Nomad has just returned from a trip to L.A. Bay via Gonzaga Bay... Before going to sleep, he sent me 6 photos to share...

Made this trip last Thursday from the south... out of Mulege..
our odometer had it at 34 miles from Hwy 1 to the new pavement... We made it in almost straight up 2 hours.... quite a few washouts along the sides
and not too many big nasty rocks to negotiate around...
most told us to deflate the tires to 20# to make the trip,,, we got in a hurry and left normal pressure... no tire problems but pretty rough ride.. I
was not sure about deflating that much and taking a chance on the tire sidewalls.
Made it from Mulege to SanFelipe in about 10 hours...
Had to really watch thru the new mtn cuts for rocks on the highway... some of them were pretty big....
only saw one big 18 wheeler 'lowboy with escorts' hauling a big tank just north of Coco's....
Common sense is a flower that doesn\'t grow in everyone\'s garden.....

Have seen this place for years but never stopped.
Good food and decent prices. Great service.
The proprietor said it had only been open for 5 days on Wed. 3-26-14.

That looks to be the former store at Rancho Grande. Am I wrong?

Next door, from the photos... There was a cantina/ taco stand there, but it seems that there are new owners and they turned it into a real restaurant?
I welcome the many Gonzaga Nomads to provide the details.

you are correct, it had relied on business from the road crews but the taco bar under the palapa
took care of that!

Thank you, willardguy. I thought that covered area...and even some of the interior...looked familiar. The bar looks to be where the "spirits"
were kept before.
So, does this mean there's no more tienda?

Allen,
They built a "super market" next door a few years ago. Its about twice the size of the old place, and pretty well stocked. Covered patio outside is
about 3x the size of the old patio. Its still a great place to enjoy a cold one and watch the world go by.

Hey there Stuart. Nice to hear from you. Gee, we miss our friends at "the" beach. We've certainly traveled more, though. (U2U sent.)
Thanks for that info. Hard to imagine all the development going on down there. I hope it's not a flash in the pan.

Bufeo, in the second restaurant photo, you can see the Rancho Grande 'Suoer Market' entrance, set back a little from the restaurant. It's been like
that for several years. The third photo is the store entrance.
For others: The Rancho Grande market has food, ice, liquor... and in back in a separate building a tire service center and used tires for sale.
July, 2012:
I bought a tire from them in 2003, as well... 265/70-16.

new to the ranch, when you walk in to your right there's two pay phone booth's you can sit down and call home. I think its VoIP?

Next there will be taxi service to San Felipe. Maybe there already is.
