Places to go on the Northern Gulf Side of Baja
Hello, all you Baja experts! My lovely girlfriend and I want to hit the most northern nice "beachy" place on the gulf (eastern) side of Baja this
Christmas break. Our interest are kayaking, fishing (on our kayaks), nice beaches, seclusion if possible, and showers. Any tips? Our regular email

Yup! Gonzaga Bay
Picture taken near Alfonsina's Resort Thanksgiving '03 (simple motel, good restaurant, friendly bar)... and that is about all! Camping just south at
Rancho Grande and Campo Beluga.
Because you say kayaking and fishing and showers. Otherwise, I would suggest Shell Island (km.26, for seclusion if you have 4WD, no facilities, just
sand) or Nuevo Mazatlan km. 32 (cold showers, shade trees, sand)

'Shell Island' is not labled as such on any map, it's just my pet name for this glorious sand island where you will be all to yourselves. 4WD with
deflated tires (15 psi) or dune buggy access only. However, there are some gringos with the last name Hale who drive big motorhomes (2WD) out there,
for a week or longer at a time.... just let a lot of air out of the tires!

Campo Nuevo Mazatlan Km. 32
Unique in the desert are so many shade trees, next to the big sand beach... south of San Felipe about 26 miles.

Be sure to air your tires down on the drive south of San Felipe. I would suggest 20 p.s.i. and keep your speeds relatively low when driving down the
long dirt road south of San Felipe. One you return to San Felipe, I would air those tires up to a hwy friendly rate of 30 or whatever you feel
comfortable with. Next week my group will be aired down from 5 p.s.i. (those with beadlock rims) to 15 and possibly above...

Yah, air pressure is critical, specially in deep sand.
Here is Baja Ken and Suzanne on Shell Island with his previous rig, a Ford Ranger.

Yes, but this is a lot more rustic (and peaceful) compaired to Pete's Camp! The showers are not heated, by the way. The toilet house is maintained,
and they are flush toilets. The owner makes his rounds and also supplies water to area pilas with his water truck.
Nuevo Mazatlan was established nearly 40 years ago by Luis Castellanos Moreno as one of the very first campos south of San Felipe, previous named AGUA
DE CHALE. He planted the trees there, staring in 1968. A man with vision, but a taste for tequila that over came him. In the early 1980's he lost the
property. I last saw him in 1989 in San Felipe.

I seem to remember in the early 70's having gotten absolutely blotto with Luis.
Didn't he have a "made-up" word he threw into conversation all the time? Something that sounded like...Allamygarnas. Then again, maybe it was the
tequila.

I don't recall a made up word Perry, but his favorite dog's name was CORSADIO. This photo was taken in 1974.. He had a wife for a short time
(Felicitas). Every morning they would walk, hand in hand to the beach to collect the fish caught in his gill net. His promiss to her, was no drinking.
One day, Eduardo (from La Roca) came over with a bottle of tequila... Felicitas left Luis, and it went down hill after that.
