San Ignacio Fire
We just spent a night in San Ignacio.
One of the recent fires pretty much burned right into town. It appeared to start near the head of the lagoon, burned along the town-side of the
lagoon, crossed the entrance road, burned right up to the edge of town, and continued on down the river. How far???
The first three or four old adobe buildings next to the road and just before the mission were gutted. Nothing but the adobe walls remain.
The fire then burned around the outside of all three sides of the mission compound's perimeter wall. Then it headed away from town.
The recent fires were still smoldering and several work crews were working to extinguish the remaining hot spots.
This Huey helicopter was flying, dropping water buckets on the hot spots. The fire crew was home-based in Acapulco and had been in San Ignacio for
the past two days.

As of a couple of days ago all the hot spots have been extinguished however the damage to some of the date palms is severe. Hopefully most of them
will survive. The good news is that most of the area around the lake were spared including most of the camp grounds.

Any idea how El Petate campground fared? (The place right across the water from Oasis, on the way to town.)
I stayed there in April, and discussed the fire danger with the owner. He was working repairing/upgrading some structures, discussed possibly adding
cabins, but told me the fire risk was very high, and discouraged much construction in the area unless it was stone.
Now I know what he meant... sad.

The fire missed the campgrounds.
Well, maybe not the last one on the left just before town. There is a sign there that says camping but I don't remember what was there. Now, it's
all ashes.
The fire burned right along the edge of the town. Between El Padrino campground and the town proper.

That's not true - the fire burned along both sides of the lagoon, nearly down to the ojo de agua. Spotty in places, but lots of carrizo and palms
were burned. I'll try to post some pictures soon.
