Yes you can get back without problems. I did it last Oct when I lost my bag. I also know of several people who have done it. When I asked the border agent about it in Oct he said if you don't cross a lot it's no big deal but if you cross multiple times a week, month etc you should have a passport.

Great news. I hope you are right. I let my U.S. passport expire a few years ago. I have not crossed the boarder in over 10 years. Don't presently have any intention of going North, but still, it is nice to know just in case someday I come up with a reason to do so.

I like to be legal in Mex, I would at least get the Passport
Card, $40 or so. I understand you can get an fmm with
Passport Card, allthough I'm sure there are people in Mex for
extended time periods with no Mex Imm papers

I have the military stops ask for all kinds of ID. I just hand them my drivers license and they copy the information they need, ask the year of the car and hand my lic. back. They are just tallying information. From what I understand they have no INM authority.

When I crossed going north at San Ysidro in September of 2011 after leaving the hospital in Ensenada with no documents whatsoever (the perps stole my wallet too), I was a bit concerned what would happen at the border. The agent at the kiosk simply asked me a few questions to determine my identity, found me on the computer and waved us through.

I just came back from San Felipe without a passport and didn't have any problem (no bunch of crap) at all. I showed the officer my Ca. drivers lisence and that was it. For the most part you get what you give.

A Trip to San Felipe does not require a Mexican issued FMM. And, as has been noted, short of some hassle, you will be able to cross back without a passport.

But, if you have plans to travel farther South, you are obliged to obtain the FMM. You must have a valid passport to get the FMM.

It would if you stay over 72 hours. Also there is a difference at the border if you have a passport but don't have it with you from not having a passport at all.

THIS.

The military checkpoints (at least all the ones I have been through) have NEVER been interested in anything other than looking for drugs, guns and ammo.

Some ask for ID in order to write your name down... easier than understanding our English. The ID doesn't have to be a passport, but it is easier to see your name in a passport. Most checkpoints are south of the border zone, and since you need (should have) an FMM south of the border zone... and you need a passport to get an FMM... that seems the logical document to ask for.

My friend (a woman) crossed as a pedestrian without a passport the first time we went. The inspector looked at her and said, "You know Mexico is a FOREIGN COUNTRY, right?"

She tilted her head and said, "Well, yeah, but the sign said Baja CALIFORNIA. California's not in Mexico!"

*massive eyerolling* "Get a passport next time."

DL is just fine to get back home IF you are not doing Sea or Air travel. When coming back to the US......most officers wont mess with you. At the worst...you may get sent to the secondary as one of my sons had to.

Being in SF for over 3 days requirement......well.....who really knows how many days you were in The Baja? :-)
