4 Day Baja Moto Adventure

Last week I spent four days in Baja doing my first "real" moto ride....dubbed Scrambler's Summer Shenanigans. The ride was planned and put together by the fine folks at Baja Bound Moto and it did not disappoint. It was a blast and a great time was had by all. We had a fairly large group of about 35 riders and a chase support crew keeping both riders and bikes fueled up. Aside from enjoying time on the trails in Baja, the group did some nice stuff for the community too. Prior to leaving, the group raised money for Buena Vida Orphanage in La Mision and also visited their facility to bring some supplies. After lunch on the first day of riding, the crew fanned out across a mile long stretch of Highway 3 and did a trash cleanup. Proceeds from the Baja Fool's bar up at Mike's Sky Ranch were donated to Casa de Paz orphanage in the Guadalupe Valley. Here are some photos from the trip:

Day 1

All loaded up and ready to go!

Crossing the border in Tijuana.

First stop was the Buena Vida Orphanage in La Mision.

The crew raised over $3,500 for the orphanage which will be used for new school uniforms and basic supplies for the facility.

Some of the niñas with gifts that were brought down.

The boys with the foosball table that was donated.

Horsepower Ranch just outside of Ensenada.

Dinner and riders meeting at Horsepower Ranch.

Day 2

About to depart Horsepower ranch.

A nice rest stop in the pines.

Sweep rider John enjoying the view.

Juan from Acambaro and his family made a great lunch on the first day of riding. Baja Bound Insurance was proud to sponsor the lunch for the crew.

Enjoying lunch in the shade.

After lunch we picked up trash along the highway.

We filled the trailer in less than an hour.

After the trash pickup we had sno-cones.

Then we visited the memorial site of racer Juan Ortiz who was a good friend of Tim and Jen from Baja Bound Moto.

Next stop was the Kurt Caselli memorial.

RIP Kurt.

Pit stop in Valle de Trinidad for ice cream and Gatorade.

Total mileage from Horsepower Ranch to Mike's Sky Rancho on day 2 was 130 miles. I was wiped out!

The pool was very inviting.

47 years of history on the walls and ceiling at Mikes Sky Ranch.

Steak dinner!

Can I have a bite please?

Day 3

Justin Morgan airing it out on the hill climb.

A nice Baja view.

Machaca burritos for lunch at San Matias.

Our Saturday ride crew hamming it up for the camera.

Bikes at Mikes.

Bozo and Ray from Baja Fools getting work done behind the bar. They raised over $500 for Casa de Paz orphanage.

They even had the famous moto-blender!

Jen and her "dress like Scrambler" outfit.

Scrambler was given the "Scrambling Man" award

I got an award for being a novice rider and not stinking it up too bad on the trail.

Day 4

About to depart Mikes Sky Ranch.

"Big Tickets" got the Boy Scout award for being the most prepared rider on the trip.

Scrambler and Monkey.

The water crossing at Mikes.

Tim from Baja Bound Moto heading up the Goat Trail out of Valle de Trinidad.

The crew took a break just off of Highway 3 when an ice cream truck drove by. They flagged him down and everyone got a nice treat.

Monkey hanging tough in the chase truck.

Lunch stop was La Cava de Marcelo in Ojos Negros.

The crew arriving at La Cava de Marcelo.

Well fed, happy cows make delicious cheese.

The entrance to the cheese cave.

We had an amazing family style lunch!

A very special thank you to Tim and Jen at Baja Bound Moto, Scrambler, Ray and Bozo from Baja Fools, the chase truck drivers, all the riders that helped me out with riding advice and the sweep/medics that kept us safe!

¡Viva Baja!

The pines were not at Horsepower Ranch, but southeast of Ojos Negros....somewhere on the east side of the 3.

Horsepower Ranch is off Highway 3 just outside of Ensenada....if you are heading east, the turnoff is a little bit before the Federal impound lot that has piles and piles of cars.

Thanks to all the generous guys and gals that "tipped" their way to over $500 for the kids at Casa de Paz orphanage in El Porvenir. That was on top of their already generous efforts for Buena Vida orphanage. I guess that Baja Fool's Bar worked it's magic!

They also finished off all the tequila we brought, but we still had a little premix gas left for the blender

For those who don't know: TW, great Baja guy, was for many years the brains behind TnT Racing. His number one rider for all those years was Tim Morton, now owner of BajaBoundMoto. They ran every Baja race they could find, and won most of them. As a team they were Awesome!
