RECENT RELEASE:
"A Mexican helicopter that crossed into Arizona and fired on US border agents on Thursday appears to have done so accidentally, a US government official told NBC News.

In a brief statement, Customs and Border Protection said that a Mexican helicopter crossed approximately 100 yards north into Arizona on Thursday morning. Two shots were fired from the helicopter, which was on a law enforcement operation.

The official described the rounds as “warning shots,” and said they were fired at two border agents sitting in an unmarked car. When the Mexicans realized what happened, they landed the helicopter and apologized profusely.

No injuries were reported. The incident is under investigation."

Something like this will play heavily in the jailed Marine case. It will clearily illustrate that Mexicans can have errors in judgment as well.

Do you mean has a US helicopter ever missed the target from 15 yards away? I think they have done that a lot in Afghanistan.

As seen on the linked article photo, the border is very defined in that location. I think if this occurred there must be routine helo crossings in that desolate area for fun and/or closer looks.

I was a helo pilot in the Army years ago in Germany and flew the border of Czechoslovakia (does not exist now) . We were very careful about not violating the border and had very specific safeguards. I think US/MX relationship does not require such strict attention as did the US/Soviet block.

I would not be surprised if it did occur. But I think it is only brought to light because the Union is using it for leverage. Otherwise I think it would never have gone public. It would have been tossed in the "need a favor later" hat.
