Gopro extension wand, recommendations?
I recently purchases a Gopro camera for future Baja travels. Does anyone have a recommendation for an extension wand, particularly for use in the
water, like for whale watching?

I use the GoPole. I think it comes in a couple different lengths, it floats and has a wrist leash/tether. There's also a telescoping version. I've
used mine also for underwater shots - it would be perfect for whale watching.

X3 on the go pole. Really happy with mine. I use it for fishing, surfing, freediving, hiking, and cool shots while driving.

PVC with handlebar mount and a motorcycle grip works for the do it yourselfer.

I have done the pvc route but not too handy for transporting on the plane. Recently picked up a telescopic one on ebay for $15. Got it yesterday and
it looks like it would work rather well although it is just 50 inches extended.

I first purchased a cheap model of a telescoping pole and my GoPro fell off the end and I lost it...crap! So I bought a better one now and have a
little floater thingy on the camera itself.
But what I really want to talk about is the problem with sticking a long pole with a camera on it around gray whales. Gray whales spook very easily
and I have experienced problems with people who when a gray whale approaches the panga...they stick this pole in right in front of them and often the
whales dont like it and just pass by instead of hanging out.
So what I do is I wait until the whale has been with us awhile and is comfortable and is interacting with the whale watchers before I gently lower the
stick in the water as unobtrusively as possible. This seems to work for me.
I also try to put people with sticks either in the bow or the stern so the sticks don't show up in everyone's photos. Last year, so many of my whale
pics had sticks right in front of the whale's face that they were unusable. So please think of other people when you are using this "tool".
It was OK when only a few people had them but now it is turning out to be problematic with people sticking poles out over the whales and in front of
their faces....so just think on that a bit. But man the whale stuff underwater is so amazing.

if you dont mind leaning far out of boat and getting wet, use your hand to reach camera underwater, you'll get fine pics, and not annoy people or
whales with sticks. there are also short sticks, like 8 inches, and they float
