Looks like a Horney Toad to me. I think you can get pregnant if you pick them up.

FROM WIKI:
"Horned lizards are a genus (Phrynosoma) of lizards which are the type genus of the family Phrynosomatidae. The horned lizard is popularly called a
"horned toad", "horny toad" or "horned frog", yet it is neither a toad nor a frog. The popular names come from the lizard's rounded body and blunt
snout, which make it resemble a toad or frog (Phrynosoma literally means "toad-bodied"). The spines on its back and sides are made from modified
scales, whereas the horns on the heads are true horns (i.e. they have a bony core). Of 15 species of horned lizards in North America, eight are native
to the United States."

I accidently ran over one but just cut it's side open. I took it home and sewed it up then let it go.

The superstition about the Horned Lizard is that if there is one near a woman who is pregnant or has had a newborn and is lactating, there will be no
mother's milk. Hence Mexicans are quick to kill them if then can.

Our kids catch n release them all summer on the ranchito. They have a good size adult right now sunning in on of their terrariums. They are so docile
my daughter will often place them on her art table next to her while shes painting.
Another nice thing is they eat insects most consider pests, she hand feeds them grasshoppers
Thanks for the photos Blanca

I saw a little baby one at my house a while back. There used to be lots of them in San Diego county when I was a kid but I don't see too many any
more. Maybe because I don't run around in the hills like I used to.

We too used to have many horned lizards here in Nipomo. As folks moved in and eliminated ants (their main diet-not the little Argentine ant), as the
ants disappeared so did the horned lizards.

They aren't just a dessert critter, as a kid I used to catch them in the foot hills of northern CA gold country. I haven't seen one in years around
here, but then again, I spend a lot less time playing in the dirt and catching bugs!

Horned Toad or Horny Toad I catch them almost every day in my yard every now and then I find one almost as big as my hand and sometimes I find babies
1 inch long. I always let them go
