??? Punta Sanfrancisquito???

. . .Good evening all. . .Me, my wife & some friends are hoping to fly into PSFO ( Punta Sanfrancisquito ) sometime after the 16th of Oct. for some turtle watching, hiking, book reading, Bull tossing & some of Rosas Huevos Rancheros & Fish Tacos. . .Anyone have an actual observation ( as opposed to hearsay ) of what the situation is like down there? We have been down there about 20 times in the past, most recently last October. . . Thanks in advance!!!!!!

I am not there yet, but should be arriving by road around the 8th or 9th, depending on what happens with where and when Simon comes ashore. I am not a pilot, but I have seen the landing strip there, and I can't help but wonder how it will hold up if Simon dumps there on the upcoming high tides.
If there is internet access there, I will post what I see in about a week.

Hi
You can email Beto at betolucero2003@yahoo.com.mx and ask him the conditions. He sent some pictures of the cabanias that show some damage but did not say anything about the runway. He has the area in the port to the north of the runways.

. . .Thanks RZ. . .I have had contact with Beto before & have an eMail to PSFO waiting for a reply. . .As a side note, years ago we were flying South when a twin & single got on 122.9 and were talking. . .Asked them about conditions at PSFO & Mulege & said they had departed San Ignacio ( Los Medicos Voladares ). . .Guess the twin did not have its fuel cap securely on & it was drafting fuel out of the right wing ( per conversation between the single & twin aircraft ). . .Aircraft crashed at Ensenada on base to final - all aboard killed. . .My friend that helped form Los Medicos Voladares had to identify them. . .About 5 years ago we flew into Thermal on a mission & had a discussion about it; neither of us knew about each other then. . .Beto's wife had hitched a ride on that plane back to CA. . .Found out about it after we left Mulege & came to PSFO. . .Have never met Beto; do not know if he knows the rest of the story. . .My friend Milt did not know until 5 years ago. . .

I knew Debra well. I am a member of the Phx Sams and all of us were saddened to learn of that tragedy.
Once we got stuck at PSFO for 3 days, engine problem, on the way to La Paz. We had to plane hitch out. Debra used her radios for 3 days calling out for rescues for us. She had 2 small kids when she died. Beto is a strong man to have carried on.

. . .I have often pondered "if" the aircraft momentarily tried sucking gas off of a less than full fuel tank whilst turning base to final. .. Did that cause the accident??? . . Any how, anyone have any info on PSFO????

if he unported a tank and an engine stopped low and slow in a turn - that could have been it. Witnesses said it looked like a stall spin in the pattern. No post crash fire so if he had any gas it was small amount.

Beto told me that Debra had hitched a ride and when the plane got to Ensenada the pilot was not sure the landing gear was down and locked. He flew over the airport a couple of times for his friends on the ground to check the gear and got low and slow and stalled.

.. . .Got a picture of the larger open air dining area / hangout area next to the kitchen . . .Roof is completely down & resting on the perimeter wall of that area. . .Do not know about the cabanas as of yet. . . Have not had a reply from Juan or Leonel yet, sooooo, I am unsure of their operational status. . .

Hola Adrián,
El uracan destruyo unas Cabañas, tenemos una cabaña para tres personas y la casa de arriba con 4 cuartos , la cosina si esta en servicio y los baños todo bien , que día vienes a san francisquito
. . . .This is the reply I got from Leonel - Juan's son - so it looks like they have Genero's house on the hill & 1 cabana, bathroom, kitchen & small dining area adjacent to the kitchen operative. . . Now I gotta find out if the generator is operating the beer cooler. . .& if they have water. . .And how is runway . . .Last time there the cows came in about 2AM & broke the PVC pipes & they lost ALL water. . .It was time to leave at that point.. . . Wife & I Really enjoy the solitude . .VERY special place to me. . .

I have to agree with you on this. It ranks right up there. I've sat there many times over dinner and a cold beer watching the water below. A very restful place. Old baja. Everything moves very slowly here. Small changes are significant here.

A diving bird.
A new breeze.
A darker shadow.
A change in sand color.
A curious wren.

Nothing 'important' happens here.

Best private beach in all Baja. Been flying there since 1981. Sad to have seen it deteriorate over the years of storms with no rebuilds. The days of Genaro and Pepe were the best, and Miguelito who sadly was electrocuted by an ungrounded refer. I once asked Genaro if I could bring my 25' pull trailer there and leave it with rent. He laughed and said - "Are you serious? I don't want this place ruined like Alfonsinas!"

Love all the old pics of PSF when the poster asked about current conditions. I should be down that way around Thanksgiving. I'll post current conditions at that point.

I would love any information about the CURRENT conditions of the road from either direction. No need to post info from a trip you took five years ago.

Thanks:spingrin:

Posting older pics isn't a need....it's a desire to honour the place.

Someone posted earlier the road in is ok and it has a few beds available.

I was there in mid-May during a long kayak trip. A strong norther blew in while we were there and we hunkered down for a few days camping on the north end of the beach. The resort looked a bit worse for wear, but the people were lovely. I caught some fish and contributed for lunch for everyone one day, and the cold beers were a real treat. Personally I would bring a tent to sleep in rather than the cabanas, but it's a special place and one of the highlights from my trip.

. . .Have been in touch with Leonel, Juan's son, and airstrip is useable, beer is cold, bathrooms are working, 1 cabana & Genero's house on the hill are used for lodging. . . The other cabanas & the big eating / meeting area next to the kitchen are out of commission ( David K is gonna post a picture of that when he wakes up? ) . . . I wonder if Juan, Mingo & Rosa will ever improve PSFO? Or are they gonna let it die slowly?? One of the worlds best beaches that is for sure . . . Used to SCUBA there, but, no more . . .Too bad. . .
