cell phone calls in Mexico

I cannot figure this out. I'm taking my U.S. cell phone with ATT coverage and the "Passport" plan that allows me to call/txt/data while in Mexico. So, how do I dial a Mexican cell phone (or landline) while in Baja? And, how do I dial to the states?

For Mexican numbers:
Landline '001+country code+area code+number' "001(52)(664)123-4567"
Cell add '1' between country code and area code "00152(1)664123-4567"

USA:'001+area code+number' "001(619)123-4567

I hope it helps.

For the first time, I was able to use my Verizon cel phone in Baja this week. I did use the country code when dialing, as posted above. I received a text from Verizon informing me of my increased costs of 99 cents per minute, shortly after crossing the border. JH

NOTE

TO ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS:

I have found out that when using your cell phone in Mexico, (no one has been able to tell me why), you MAY have to dial 044 or 045 to reach that Mexican phone number.

With my pre-paid ATT Go Phone that I bought in Anchorage for $28, I enter; + then 1 then the US area code and number.
I have not called a Mexico land line, but I called my dentist's cell phone with just the number on her business card.
In the US, calls cost ten cents a minute, but they are worth twenty five cents in Telcel's world.

The phone also works in Canada for 39 cents/min

044 was used to call mexican cellphones in a mode named "el que llama, paga", thats "caller pays". That was when companies charged both the caller and the called.

045 was a mode to dial cellphones when they are out of the "home signal", as in roaming or logged in other company cell towers.

Both modes are obsolete now.

Obsolete? I still have to dial O44 to call a Mex Cell from my Mex Landline?

Dialing from a Mexico land line to a Mexico Cell Phone 044 is for local calls 045 is for long distance calls. i.e. 044-624-xxx-xxxx in los cabos 045-612-xxx-xxxx los cabos to la paz

Mexico cell phone to Mexico cell phone use only area code

This is certainly good news...Verizon has been useless for me for so long in Baja I don't even try any more. But for emergencies it certainly would be nice to make the call.

Then again like many of you, where I go the only "communication" is over camp fires and (mostly) empty bottles of tequila.

If your phone uses 'CDMA' then it usually adopts a local number when roaming, 'like Verizon', and can dial local numbers like a native phone.

'GSM' phones like ATT and TMobile need to use the full International dialing numbers. Also '+' replaces '001' or '011' for dialing.

Mexico is GSM with CDMA coverage in large cities only.

I had Verizon for 15 years and then recently switched to TMobile and am very happy with the lower price and coverage for calls and internet.
