Bugs in Baja Post Odile
Nomads,
Odille left a lot of water and the mosquitoes have apparently been thick....with Dengue following.
I will be in Los Barrilles in late December/early January and around Loreto just before that on the way south.
Any Nomad clairvoyants or regulars in those areas able to predict the mosquito situation in that time frame?
I have my bug spray packed (Off) and am wondering if I should get a mosquito net (renting rooms).
Thanks for any predictions....

I have consulted with the mosquito powers and they predict:
Very little mosco's in Loreto at that time.
The problem in Loreto isn't as bad as I would of thought. They are around but not thick with them. Assuming
the wet season is behind us, the bobo's should be gone by then.
Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

I am in La Paz and I am super cautious, using off (green top) before I leave the house and again in the early evening. I am a magnet for anything
that bites and so far no mosquito bites...touch wood. The paper said there were 309 new cases of dengue down here last week, 200 of them in La Paz,
so it is still lurking...If the places you stay have standing water or lots of gardens there will probably be mosquitoes, unless the temperatures drop
significantly by then...

There have been a few mosquitoes on the road down...mostly at Puerto Escondido. More butterflies, though! LB was a bit worse for mosquitos las year
and bit of Dengue, so bug spray is a good idea. We bought a cheap bug tent for this year.

I will be down in just over a month from now....will be in Tripui for 2 days (Puerto Escondido) and it is likely to be buggier than
Barriles/BuenaVista where there will be some wind.
I will be riding up to La Ventana area from BV....are you in the area? U2U me if so....

I have a trip planned in late December to Northern Colombia. The in-laws have **all been sick with Dengue Fever** I know, because I see their
pictures on Facebook all sick, swollen faces, sacked out for 7-10 days. Both my wife and I are nervous about our upcoming trip.

I just read that there are 171 new cases of dengue between November 3 and 7 and that the mosquitoes here have adapted to the cold and that we should
continue to be vigilant....I think I might die of deet poisoning

Pretty much same as it ever was here. An 8oz. bottle of 100% deet lasts over a year for the two of us and our visitors. (a couple of drops for your
whole body - no joke) Pretty much answers the bug question for us.

In reading Father Baegert's book about life in Jesuit California, he went to some length to describe how the bugs came from everywhere after a rare
rain at Mission San Luis Gonzaga. He also talked about how it was impossible to keep them out of the storehouse.
How little we understand how much they suffered back then in the 18th Century.

Dengue in paradise
My husband and I recently returned to the states after 2 months in Cabo Pulmo. It was the longest stretch we'd spent there. Arrived in mid-October,
almost the first gringo "tourists" around since Odile. Odile's moisture had contributed to incredibly green vistas, and a great mosquito bloom. In
our second month there, Mark came down with dengue fever. Had the good fortune of having friends in the local community who made Cholla root tea for
Mark, which helps fever drop. Wasn't the tastiest of all possible teas ("pond water" we called it), but every time he took it, his fever would recede
for about 4 hours; much more effective than acetaminaphen. Went to get blood tests, etc., and confirmed that it was dengue, although once a person
develops that spectacular bright red color/rash, there's little question. A month has since passed, and he feels that he's still getting his energy
back. But luckily it didn't turn hemorrhagic. We went to the local clinics in La Ribera and Los Barriles to see docs and get lab work done. They
said it's important for them to collect data about the number of cases, especially among tourists.
Now looking very much forward to the Dengue virus vaccine that's supposed to be out later this year or early next. Reluctant to suggest anyone visit
the East Cape during the wet season until the vaccine is available.
