Marinas in La Paz
We are thinking about taking the boat down from San Carlos to La Paz in June.
Thinking about leaving the boat there for 6 months or so and doing a couple trips down. Pictures look amazing.
I've never been further than Loreto. How many marinas are there in La Paz? How hard is it to get a slip? What's the best one?

I would use Costa Baja just because it's the closest to the islands and good fishing.

Costa Baja is a high-end boating resort with all the bells and whistles. Good place to have boat drinks and compare helicopters.
Marina de La Paz is easy walking to the malecon and downtown La Paz. If Mary still works in the office, she can direct you to anywhere.
Not a big problem getting a slip at either. Depends on the season and any get-togethers happening. Check also on cruisers forums, Latitude 38, etc.
Have tied up at Marina de La Paz a few times in my old stinkpot...and loved it.

We have had our sailboat in Marina de la Paz for the past 16 years. It is a family operation with folks who treat you like family. The same staff is
there year after year. We have the same diver who cleans the bottom and looks after our boat for 8 months when we are gone. Lots of activities due
to this being the location of Club Cruceros, their clubhouse, and book-DVD lending. We meet up with the same folks year after year. Reverse osmosis
water is piped to boats as is fast internet (both free). Downtown is 5-10 minutes away. Anchorage in just off this marina and they therefore have a
dinghy dock with potable water spout at that dock too. Very cruiser friendly.

You don't mention whether you are a powerboater or a blowboat or what you are looking to do while here. If you are coming down just for the fishing I
would suggest Costa Baja. It is the closest marina to the fishing grounds out at the Bajo or Isla Cerralvo.
If you are more of a cruiser with the intention of making La Paz a staging point I would definitely go with Marina de La Paz as you are right in town
and within walking distance of everything.
I haven't checked the rates at all the various marinas but I have slipped at Fidepaz (loooong run out of the bay with a very narrow channel) and at
Costa Baja and as I recall the slip fees were comparable.
As you approach La Paz just know there is a very definite channel you want to follow. (It is very well marked). Steer to the Pemex refinery near
Pichilingue and you will pick up the channel right at the entrance to Costa Baja and then you can follow it in to Marina de La Paz

The Bay of La Paz has 5 marinas. There are divers and services at each. Your chosen maintenance crew can come to either of the Marinas.
The furthest out or closest to the islands is Marina Pichelingue Cantamar. There are only a few slips. Being the furthest out you save time and gas
boating and can enjoy the quick and quiet access to diving and fishing.
Costa baja is next as you enter the Bay, the Marina has a golf course, condos, haute cuisine and is the home of many large yachts.
Palmira is next, there are many sailboats, good breeze in Summer, biking to downtown restaurants and bars.
Cortez is the newest it is located at Marina Coral and uses a new sophisticated type of dock that is anchored on springs, the marina is in the center
of town and closest to everything. There are restaurants and a beautiful view of La Paz. My concern is that it is exposed to waves and wind but this
does not seem to be the case. There was zero damage from Odile. Pacenos say this is the best.
Marina La Paz is a community, it's a great spot but it has it's quirks. Can feel claustrophobic. Chose your slip carefully. Depending on your desire
for breeze, people, current access etc.
Fidepaz is buried deep in the Bay, though has it's own special quality, restaurants bands, easy access for car parking, closer to enter/exit town by
car.

remember hurricane season. be sure boat is (relatively) secure for the six months. marinas can and have been hammered. be sure your insurance
covers La Paz in hurricane season...
reality\'s never been of much use out here...

Thanks for the info. I've been all up and down Baja on the water from San Felipe to Loreto and San Carlos to Kino, but never South of Loreto on the
water.
What's the best option to get gas after Loreto?
I haven't studied the charts or guide books yet, curious how far out the islands are? What are the best bays?

If you do not have it I would recommend The Cruiser's Guide. "Sea Of Cortez" by Shawn Breeding and Heather Bansmer.
It will have all this information and a lot more.
I would second what gnukid said.
As far as gas I think you would have to jug it in Loreto. Just south is Puerto Escondido they have dock side gas, then the next gas south is La Paz
