San Jose del Cabo carnival at the "fairgrounds"?

Heya nomads -

Last year around this time we stumbled onto a great carnival (not to be confused with "carnaval") at what seemed to be the fairgrounds/events area just off mex1 on the north side of San Jose del Cabo (just north of the big roundabout/Mega Cascada).

Does anyone know if this is a recurring event, or where I could find a list of events for that location? We would love to go again. Dirt cheap giant margaritas, great tacos, terrifyingly rickety carnival rides, fantastic people watching, blanket auctions, etc. Highly recommended if you ever find a Mexican carnival, by the way.

Thanks!

Each year in the month of March, San Jose del Cabo celebrates a festival of traditions to honor San Jose, the city's patron saint.

There's a group on facebook tryimg to get the festival canceled because the city is broke .The city hall was robbed of 3,000,000
pesos the first of Feb. 2015 (inside job, surprise!).

Oh, J.

We stumbled into one of those in the Yucatan in '92, had been drinking, got suckered onto a Ferris Wheel that on closer examination looked like it hadn't had maintenance since it was sold for scrap in Kansas in the '50's!!! The guys saw the terror in my eyes, and wouldn't let us off...for a l o n g time! I'll never forget it! They spun the thing so fast, and stopped it so fast a crowd gathered!!! Fun to look back upon.

I think we might have been on the same ferris wheel, P, which hasn't seen much maintenance since '92, either. I think they subsidize the stiff margaritas so people will be brave enough to get on the rides!

There are lots of jokes about Mexican OSHA!

March 19 is Saint Joseph day and the fiesta falls around that date, according to when the weekend is.
I think we need the fiesta this year more than ever....let's celebrate our suvival.

I don't know the exact dates for the festival but there is supposed to be a title fight (boxing) happening there on the 14th of March. We went last year and it was outstanding! No charge for seats (we sat ringside) and drank 20 peso Pacifico's all night. Festival doesn't get going until at least 7:00 pm.

The fiesta this year is from March 11-18.
I guess that gives us an extra day to celebrate Saint Joseph!?!?!?!

It looks like March 08 - 19th for 2015. Their website is a horrible confusion of dates tho.

Thanks, everyone. Maybe we will see you there. If you hear of any gringos tragically crushed by a Mexican ferris wheel - well, we died happy.

Thanks, toronja it reminded me of my childhood growing up in Baja, every time they would set up shop the gossiper mothers would start a rumor saying "Run and hide your children the gypsies are here"

Ha! I think that one might be worldwide, nando; my mother never let us out of her sight when there was a carnival in town, either.

How the town got its name

How San Jose del Cabo began (accent marks removed to post)...

As there already was a California mission called San Jose (de Comondu), 'del Cabo' was attached to make the new location clear. The sponsor (benefactor) of the new mission was Don Jose de la Puente, the Marques de Villapuente. Missions were named for saints that shared the same name as the benefactor (San Jose).

The rest of the founding story:

The 12th California mission was planned for the land of the Pericu and to provide support for the Manila galleon. The Jesuit Visitador General, Padre Jose de Echeverria chose Padre Nicolas Tamaral from the La Purisima mission to open the new mission.

In March of 1730, Echeverria and Tamaral sailed south from Loreto to La Paz, along with several Spanish soldiers. Following an inspection of the mission at La Paz, they traveled south to the visita of Todos Santos, and mission of Santiago.

A days journey south from Santiago, they found a suitable site on an estuary where a fresh water river reached the sea.

On April 8, 1730, San Jose del Cabo was founded.
