off-topic forum

I'd like to see the off-topic forum work like the rest of the forums. No password, posts show up on the today's posts page. The off-topic threads would get more participation.

I disagree, in fact I think posts that evolve into political rants that have nothing to do with Baja should be moved there (IE the current 'Mega drought' thread)
It is not a big deal to sign in to 'Off Topic', and many of us don't want that traffic cluttering the recent post format.

If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

cluttering? do you mean the extra rows to include off-topic in the list of posts is a big nuisance?

the mega-drought thread should be moved, as you say

Well,
I'm going to post up an opinion here that might rile a few of the establishment.

I've been watching for years now that when a more progressive and thoughtful thread is derailed by a few posters such as David K.

I think it's totally intentional and serves the purpose of booting such a thread to an off topic venue where it will die a death that is desired by that bent of political perspective.

This is not the only forum that has this type of occurrence and outcome. I could go further and define each of the "participants" who routinely engage in this behaviour but I've learned through other forums that those who run the house make the rules.

I'm actually quite surprised that the quote thread has survived as long as it has. Personally, I have attempted to bring it back on topic as much as possible.

I cite resources that I didn't measure myself a week or decade ago and attempt to keep an intellectual conversation without politics in application. The typical derailment is the opposite from my perspective.

The forum owner gets to choose, I hope he or she or them choose wisely. In this regard, my son in Oakland tells me that water rates are being raised and the state is "condemned" to running out of potable water in the next year. This is On Topic and goes far beyond recommending drip water systems for your yard.

Reality is a b-tch.....as the old vernacular applies.....and I don't own any servers or forums. I've grown to love Baja through Steinbeck and experience so the ball does not rest in my court.

I would ask for wisdom and attention to real science and facts...most difficult requests in the current social and political climate.

BWTFDIK...I'm a simple country boy born and raised in the absolute Red Neck and Conservative state of Wyoming. There are not a bunch of us ever and fewer of us left so load up and take your best shot....I can take it and I can dish it out..........:tumble:

Everbody\'s preachin\' at me that we all wanna git to heaven, trouble is, nobody wants to die to git there.-BB King
Reality is what does not go away when you stop believing in it. -Philip K Dick
Nothing is worse than active ignorance. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe(1749-1832, German writer, artist and politician)
When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I\'ve never tried before. - Mae West
Experience is what keeps a man who makes the same mistake twice from admitting it the third time around.

What is "progressive" and "thoughtful" about NOT discussing other opinions or the facts? How many of my posts been "derailed" by sidebars...? Do I demand changes to Doug's forums? NO!

I am all for MORE people posting MORE Baja trip reports and events happenings... and ask all the questions they may have. Making friends is another benefit of Baja Nomad, some of you need to try it instead of making enemies here. I don't care what your politics are, only that we are all free to think the way we want with factual information to support those beliefs. Around the Baja campfire, we never talk politics only Baja stories. I have many friends here that don't vote the way I do, so no need to conform to any side if you are a Nomad.

Now, because my name was used to promote the control idea here:

The only "derailing" is when I may question the idea that sea levels have risen, when I can go to the same places, roads, and buildings along the sea that I did 30, 40, even 50 years ago... and they are STILL in the same place above the sea. The idea that man is more powerful than Nature and only he can cause climates to change or sea levels to rise is crazy. I do not tell people that I am right, but instead use their own eyes to see then truth. Trust people and not Big Government. 'Progressive' is just New-speak for oppressive dictatorship in government. There Mr. Sweetwater, is that derailed enough for you? Have a nice day!

DK, that was a very in-your-face derailing. You really should go to the OT and practice your flame thrower politics in the OT venue!

I get pretty tired of all the David K bashing that goes on in this forum. It was Sweetwater that first brought up his name in this thread which had nothing to do with the topic, then you get all upset when David comes back to defend himself. Shouldn't you be aiming your wrath at Sweetwater for derailing the thread and turning it personal. You all need to grow up be a little more tolerant of people with other views that don't exactly align with you own.

Debate is good, name calling and personal insults are childish and counterproductive. It's really not that hard to get one's point across without being insulting. The anonymous nature of the internet breeds incivility, maybe we should all try harder to make our posts more like we are speaking to someone face to face.

I regularly post there and I don't think what you say is true. There are a couple of guys that continually insult each other and that's unfortunate. But, there are also a handful of off-topic participants that post interesting things and discuss current events without insulting others.

I've been hanging out on the message board while my back gets over an encounter with a heavy flower pot and I was thinking that if the off-topic board got more exposure, there would be more posts by people that have something interesting to offer.

Just a thought.
