Hi Way 5 north bound
We will be leaving Los Barriles 4-16-15 headed for Yuma. And I have a couple of questions.
1. What is hi way 5 like going to Mexicali like? I will be pulling a 14 ft cargo trailer. How much of the rd is dirt?
2. Should we cross at Mexicali or should we go to Algadones?
Any Information would be greatly appreciated.

Hwy 11 to hwy5 to mex

traveled hwy 11 on Thursday. Left hwy 1 at 12.05 and reached the pavement hwy 5 in 1 :32 minutes with no stops. Total mileage 24 Overall trip was
excellent with 2:50 from Gonzaga to San Felipi .Stayed at the Angles inn first three story hotel on right going in. Up at 7:00 Mexicali west by 9:15
,crossed by 10:00 fantastic trip from Chivato
Hwy 11 was rough but seemed packed? Big rigs? No worse than the road to shell beach. Passed three big rig heading north and one south. Two campers
with a flat and about four other vechicles,6 bikes So impressed with highway,time saved and safety felt compared to Hwy 1

Question 1
There has been a lot of info posted recently, have you read those threads?
You don't say if your trailer will be hauling a load or running north empty. In November I drove north with a very light trailer with 15 inch tires
running 10 psi, and I had no problems. I stopped at Coco's for a bit, so I don't have a time for that stretch, but pulling a trailer I don't think I
averaged over ten miles per hour.
If you are pulling a heavy or fragile load, it may not be a good choice for you. I go that way every trip, but I run light and check things often.
If you have searched the other threads about Highway 5, you should know that the 'Vados' on the paved stretch of road between Puertecitos and San
Felipe can bottom out suspension or launch your trailer. Caution, they aren't all marked!

Question 2
I crossed going north at the main (west) Mexicali enty the day before Thanksgiving. It was a three hour event. I did not know about the East
crossing at that time, so I son't know if it is faster. I intend to use it next time I visit .
I crossed at Algodones the year before, using some back roads heading east towards the Colorado River rather than driving north and usin the Mex 2
toll road. I don't recommend it, it was slow and confusing, and the Algodones customs took about an hour an a half.
If you are going to drive far enough north to catch the toll road (remember they charge for overall length) you might as well cross at Mexicali and
use the US highways, and gas stations.
