S.D. Car Registration Renewal

To all: I have had my vehicles registered in S.D. for many years. Just received the card in the mail. In the past, I have sent the card and a cashiers check. Has anyone renewed lately, the card is asking for S.D. drivers license number or ID#. I don't remember them asking in the past. Any info appreciated, thanks bk

The reason they are asking for your ID or DL number is so you can renew on line, elskel.
Other than that, the easiest way to renew is to call the treasurer where you have your vehicles registered and give them a credit or debit card number.
You can still send the card and a cashier's check as you did before.

That's the site and have been using it for years. No check mailing involved.

Speaking of SD registrations...

Did you know that he 2014 population for Clay County, where most of us ex-pats get their registration, was 13,932 including children. However, Clay County issued close to 300,000 vehicle registrations. Don't know the percentage of those that are in Mexico but I bet there are more than 13,932 in Baja alone. Each county in South Dakota is identified by the letter following the first 2 digits and Clay County used to be the letter G but when they reached 260,000 registrations they had to switch to the letter H.

Isn't it possible that each resident has 21.5 vehicles?

I heard Clay County has come under scrutiny for the amount of cars they
plate and the processes used to issue them.

If everyone was happy and the world looked like a pretty nice place, somehow I think that Greengoes would have to come along and do something negative so that the rest of the world suffers equally.

I don't get it, if you want to truly be a part of Mexico and live there why not just do it right and register your car in Mexico? Its one thing if you are a "tourist" but if you have your Immigration or Citizen just do the same as we ask people who move to our Country.

I am sorry you feel what I related is negative information. If I had SD plates I would have a back up plan in case the day came they were cut off. It is common knowledge why people choose to obtain them and CA is pondering what it can do to stop the loss of revenue.

One viable answer, if you plan to never take your CA registered car back to the states, is California's PNO provision:

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/pubs/brochures/fast_...

The pain of the mandatory two year smog check is gone and the fees are lessened for the registration. Just don't be caught driving it on CA roads.

Six years ago I looked into getting SD plates and decided the annoyance of smog checks and the traveling north for them did not outweigh the concern I would have every time I drove in CA looking over my shoulder.

Have my vehicles registered in SD for many years. Travel to Ca. usually several times a year and yet have to experience an issue with those plates. Was in Sacramento for some medical treatment for over 2 months and nobody paid any attention to my plates.
