Need recomendations for fillet knives
Somehow, my fillet knife disappeared and I need to replace it. I need recommendations; I'd like to stay under $50.
Thanks

I use a Rapala from Walmart. It costs about $10.00, and is a great knife. I would gladly pay $50.00 for a better knife, but it is not necessary.
Gotta love Walmart!

Look at Victornox, many of the sport boat guys use them. Not the hardest steel at all, but easy to maintain and use.
Their Chiefs knife is Food Illustrated go to knife.

Carbon Blades are by far the sharpest. Pro's: sharpens fast easy and sharp whether you use a stone or rod. Cons: Rust. Dry it off. and sheath after
use.
Get em at a commercial marine supply. WAY under $50 .

I like Forschners/ Victorinox knives.
I have a 10 inch, but a lot of the Mex skippers over here have the 12 inch and they do work better on a bigger fish.
Right in your price range, Santiago, especially if you are an Amazon Prime guy. MIght be able to find it cheaper, but the shipping is right.
A great overall knife for cutting meats, turkeys, too.

Some people like the ones with the Graton edge. I've never used one.
I found the Rapalas to be too narrow bladed for me and I had trouble keeping them flat as I went along the ribs of a big fish. I like the increased
width of the Forschners for this.
Of course, all I catch are big fish..................

Sharp and technique --- Sometime I have sharp but I really never had the skill. I get by okay though.

Times 3. they are called breaking knives, for breaking large pieces of meat in to smaller ones.
You are cleaning large fish, right.

Ferremar Loreto has a nice selection of Victoronox/Forschner knives.
From foldable multi tools, Swiss Army style, to wood handled filet knives.
Yeah they are more $$...but are here and ready to roll now.
3 passes on a hard Arkansas stone and you will cut fish....guaranteed.

That's the one that works for me, I also have a old case that has been sharpened down to a long point that is good for cleaning frames for the cat.

I don't know if you folks are getting the same banner on this forum from FSW showing fillet knives. The one on the left from Dexter, is the same
shape as my all time favorite large fish knife! I think mine is longer than 8 inches (but then, all guys think that).
I bought mine in Mexico at an open air market after watching the local fishermen cutting the catch of the day with speed and precision. It was
unbranded Japanese steel, and very flexible. Nothing beats it for salmon and Halibut, you can keep those little fillet knives for trout and pan fish.
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!
"Could do better if he tried!" Report card comments from most of my grade school teachers. Sadly, still true!

Forshners all the way. I like the big one for cutting the fish and the smaller one in the kitchen for trimming. And you need WAY MORE than one knife!
By the way, you left at the perfect time. Mosquitos and no see ums ate me alive! Damn they itch!

Forschners/Victorinox. That is my choice. I have the 8, 10 and 12 inch. I also like the wooden handle Rapalas for smaller fish.
