I drove that section northbound on July 2. It is 23 miles of rocky dirt road. It took me an hour to get from Hwy 1 pavement to new road pavement. Rains had damaged the southern section of the road so that even on the straightaways you can't go fast due to dips and holes in the road where the water had puddled. The rains were well past and road was dry but the effects remained. Who knows if recent rains in San Diego hit there first??

With a solid vehicle and good tires you should be just fine. I passed several people going south bound in SUV's and pickups. One family was driving a standard passenger car, slow going. I also passed two semi trucks that were broken and disabled. I wouldn't want my goods hauled down that road.

I live out a crappy dirt road and found this one a little worse than mine due to the hard rockiness of the terrain vs the sandier area where I live. It looked like they are gearing up to finish or extend the pavement. That will be great. This is my new route for my annual trip north. Really enjoyed missing all the traffic on the west side.

As Coco, no idea. I just drove on by. Lots of heavy equipment staged nearby.

No b-tchin\' in the Baja.

I have posted a video on Youtube of the crossing from Hwy 5 to Hwy 1 - it is speeded up so only lasts 10 minutes but it gives an idea of the conditions.

Well that was fun to watch, and listen to! I have made a few round trips over that section, and have never encountered that many other vehicles.

Thanks for posting that, and you are right, that real time would be tedious to watch. One thing I have noticed about Go Pro footage, is that it doesn't reflect the grade of the road very well.

I also never realized that it was allowed to drive by Coco's without stopping in for a beer or soda!

If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

"Could do better if he tried!" Report card comments from most of my grade school teachers. Sadly, still true!

I drove south from San Felipe a week ago today. The 24 mile unfinished section took 45 minutes (loosening up the suspension on a new 4-runner). It was my first time crossing the border at Mexicali and the unfinished road was a minor inconvenience compared with the congestion - Tijuana/Ensenada/San Quintin/etc. Towing a trailer, however, would be a different matter. I would bite the bullet and deal with the traffic on the western route.

I came through Mexicali on the 21st around 10am - it was fine, the only delay was a 10 minute stop to pay my import duty on some shopping and then the road is direct down to San Felipe.

It was easy.
The East crossing was closed so I followed another car a half mile or so west. I was loaded down with rods and reels, a downrigger, ten gallons of motor oil, ATV tires, a recliner, boat and truck parts, fishing tackle, etc. There was no line and the border guard waved me through in the nothing to declare line without a second look as he waved the car behind me over to the side.

Mexicali downtown north border wait was 1 hr 12 min this afternoon. Excellent gaurd asked a couple questions and passed us on in.

Gonzaga to Chapala was 12 excellent paved miles and 20 of 23 dirt miles very very rough. Coco was great to chat with.

New highway going by Coco's about 2 miles west. Construction work goes to about 6 miles from Chapala.

Trip report, photos, maps all in the near future!
