Baja California Sees Rise In Tourism

Some good news for the tourism business. It's been a long haul since the depth of the recession and drug war.

"Baja California lured 9.3 million foreign visitors so far this year, up 12 percent from the same period last year, the state governor’s office said in a press release Monday.

Officials said the spike in tourism was especially notable over the weekend of July 25-26, when at least 260,000 people visited the state. That’s more than any other weekend since 2007."

It has been a while since that awful carnage that saw bodies strung from overpasses. The nexus of the violence has been over in Sonora for some time. That said, the passport requirement probably still keeps many San Diego youngsters from heading down for the evening.

Time was, you could hop the trolley, walk over and party, and just walk back to the trolley.

I noticed that virtually all the hotels in Ensenada were completely booked the weekends of July 18th and the 25th. I couldn't even get a room in my usual super crappy place. Rosarito looked busy too. It looks like this weekend will be similarly busy. Good news for Baja.

Good for them. They deserve to have a renaissance. A fun town.
