Auto liability only question
All Mex insurance companies require US comp and collision coverage to get Mex c&c but what about liability only insurance? I`m keeping an old car
in Baja permanently and don`t need collision and would like to cancel my US policy if possible and keep it on a non op status with the DMV.

I believe they require the insurance because technically you are buying a tourist policy at a reduced rate. This allows them to make some assurance
that the car is not in Mexico full time. Regular Mexican insurance does not require the US policy. That's what we carry on the car we leave in Baja.

Thanks. So can I get regular Mex insurance with just a tourist visa?

Larry, actually the restriction only applied while you had your FM2. After you got Immigrado the restriction no longer applied. I have not found
any restriction for the Residente Permanente.

phil, Are car is registered in Arizona under unique circumstances. In Arizona if you check off a statement each time you register the vehicle (which
can be up to 5 years) that you will not be driving on Arizona roadways then you are not required to have insurance or get a smog check. The insurance
company did not care that we had Arizona plates.

I have a couple of cars in Alaska, and a couple more in California. They are older vehicles that I only carry liability. and comprehensive on.
When they are going to be sitting for months at a time, I make a phone call and put them in a comprehensive only status. That keeps the policy in
force at a fraction of the cost, and might come in handy some day if one of them is damaged or stolen while I am gone.
Would that work for you? I don't leave a car down there, but I buy annual insurance for Mexico coverage. It is very affordable for non collision
coverage!
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!
"Could do better if he tried!" Report card comments from most of my grade school teachers. Sadly, still true!

I believe inmigrados who were not physically present for 5 out of 10 years, could lose their status. It was buried deep in the regulations, but
definitely there. |
Could be, I just never saw it like you do during the FM2 process. Therefore it could also be in the Residente Permanente regulations. I just have
never seen it.

On a related note, I am only in Baja for less than six months every Winter. I have a car I would like to use in the Winter and store there for the
rest of the year. I had planned on keeping the U.S. registration up to date. Has anyone obtained Mexican insurance in such circumstances?

In the last 14 years we have Evolved from the tourist visa to the R.P. and the only time we have showed any proof to anyone is when we crossed to and
from Baja Sur and then we only flashed the appropriate document. they have no way of knowing how long we are here or there.

So did you have to keep your U.S. insurance active? The Mexican policies I have gotten in the past required that.
I'm trying to save a few bucks.

I Summer in Washington. They don't ask when registering.
Anyone from Washington or a state that doesn't ask about insurance have any enlightenment?
