Passport card good for tourist permit

Does anyone know from experience if the Mexicans accept a passport card instead of a passport book.

For entry and exit by land or sea, yes. For international flights, no.

I believe air travel within mexico would be allowed, but you should do some research on that.

Our experience - yes

Two weeks ago at the TJ port of entry my wife got her 180 day travel visa using a passport card. $22 or so.

I am curious about which border crossing would not accept it?

TJ last year, two times freinds crossed TJ. They went to office at border.Where told We need your passport, not your passport card..So they rode into Mexico, with nothing. That was 2014,so maybe things have changed.

Took the road from Mexicali to Tijuana. Passed through the military checkpoint just west of the Laguna Salada. An immigration official stopped me and asked to see my papers. I didn't have any. I was politely told that they were tightening things up and I would need to start carrying an FMM. (Toursit card).

Got mine in Ensenada 6 months ago with a card. Also there was a big poster at the desk with accepted forms of ID and there was a pic of a PP card.
I don`t think a card was good a year or so ago, but now es bueno!!!

I suspect that there will be some INM employees, or perhaps even local supervisors that did not get the memo, or got it wrong.

Lots of good responses. I asked because I need to renew my PP and can get the card only for $30 instead of paying $110 for the book. Since I don't fly international I can save some bucks. Thanks.

Wife and I have both have the card since it first became available for when we drive across and regular book for air travel. Have never had a problem using my card to get a tourist visa at the TJ office. But that being said, it does not surprise me some have been told that they don't accept it. Sometimes you get a guy in there thats a little bit off.

Passport card was fine on my last two trips south (Oct. and Nov.) at the west Mexicali crossing. Both times I asked for a 5 day FMM (because they are free) and they wrote it for a week.

The most recent two times we have crossed the mexican border agent has stopped us for a search followed by a mexican immigration official asking for our tourist paperwork. Both times I told them I didn't have papers yet and they politely escorted me to the office. Both times the official mentioned that they are tightening their immigration. Once we left the border, on both trips, we weren't asked for the papers again by anyone.
