traveling alone with dog
Im thinking of driving my 17' 1984 toyota RV down to la paz from northern CA in a week or so, I'd be traveling with my dog, Ive red a lot into baja
travel..
Ive heard mixed reviews about traveling alone, Im pretty sure it will be fine, i won't be driving at night, and will try to stay the nights mostly in
campgrounds or rv resorts.. any suggestions for me?

Have all your dogs papers in order! Never been asked but as soon as you do not have them they will ask....Right?

I could not imagine being anywhere without my dog !! and never in Baja.. just wish they would live a bit longer as I'm on Baja rescue # 4 and a dog in
Baja (if behaved) is a true asset !! Ps. Where in norcal are you ??

Get pesos for gas and keep the tank full. Camping Mexico's Baja by Mike and Terri Church is a good book for RV camp sites and other info.

I would not want to do that trip alone, that is why I always travel with my dog!
I am in Grass Valley CA right now, and intended to be on the road headed south, but my current best friend got gored and stomped by a large buck.
The stitches haven't healed up enough to travel yet, and the vet bills have taken a huge chunk out of my Baja travel funds.
I suggest that when you get to the La Paz area, you check in at Campestre Maranatha. Great people there, and they have full hook ups or campsites,
internet access, showers, laundry facilities, a bakery/coffee shop, and is a great place to ask questions starting with "Where is......"
Have fun, I am jealous, because I don't know when I will be able to get down there!

awesome! thanks for the fast replies, and suggestions! Im up in Eureka, and Wilfred my co-pilot is a very tame 3 year old rotweiler.. the only thing
holding me back from leaving is that I misplaced the hardcopy of my drivers license recently, (I have a paper printout from the dmv) and my new copy
won't be here for another few weeks.. I imagine getting hassled down there If I were to show a paper printout from the dmv to mexican law enforcement,
so I may have to postpone my trip until the hard copy gets here.. what do y'all think?

I drive 5000kms twice a year from north central Alberta to La Paz with my shepx and labx. We take 8 easy days letting all the harried souls pass us
on the way. My pups don't talk politics, never argue with me and don't have to stop for a smoke break. And they seem to like listening to cannel 17
on XM. Dont over think things, ignore the media, smile a lot and you will have a wonderful trip.

Also make sure your dog is on a tick program..my dog got ticks on the mainland last year ..they carried erlichiosis ..which is fatal if not caught
early. We got lucky because we had her blood checked before leaving the area,she had the disease ..so we would have lost her if we hadn't been
vigilant.
Also had her on revolution at the time which wasn't effective.. It seems to be the consensus by vets in the Mazatlán area that Frontline is a much
better tick and flea medication.
We are in the La Paz area ..seems it's common knowledge that the ticks here carry the disease.. So a heads up for all you dog lovers!!!

Our Yorkie travels with us several times a year, thanks for the info.
As an aside, many pet stores and or vets, will donate expired dry dog food to take to Baja. Consider asking your supplier for some, feed a hungry dog
or cat.

They may donate but Mexican Customs has been enforcing the 50lb per dog limit. If you want to help out the local dogs, buy a couple of bags at the
Ensenada Smart & Final or Wal-Mart

yea this thing is ancient but she's pretty darn reliable and parts are easy to find.. I have 800 miles between my house and the border, if she makes
it the first 800 she'll be fine the rest of the way..

The 22R toy motor
besides too small of a radiator,micky mouse oil pump seal and exhaust leak's its a damn fine lil four banger.. changed to 22RE in 85/6 with fuel
injection and a single row timing chain..have worked on a million of them and they are a tuff lill bastard

Common motor in Baja, lots of local mechanics will be able to work on it.
