First trip of the season for Whale Magic tours!
I just got back from our first whale trip at Ojo de Liebre and happy to have Whale-ista aboard!
There were more whales than usual for so early in the season. It was one of those rare flat calm, sunny and warm days on the lagoon.
We saw several mothers with their newborn calves...one that was only a couple days old! Note the pinkish colour in the photo of the baby and those
cute dimples on it's nose!
One calf seemed to be having some control issues with it's tail...just like last year's first trip where we saw a calf with a paralyzed tail.
the Ejido has improved the palapas and now are charging $10 a night for them and the government put in a fancy new jetty...long enough so we wont have
to wade in the water at low tide anymore! It isnt quite finished yet so we had to go down to the dock on a ladder...but say it will be ready in a
couple weeks.
We were hoping to see a birth as there were 3 different whales in pre labour but to no avail. There were a few dolphins hanging about looking forward
to a placenta lunch!I bet those moms have their new babies next week when I return.
We still have room on the next trips Jan.14th and 17th if anyone wants to join us for those.

That's awesome. I hope to go to see the whales later in the season.

Great report and great photos, Shari.
We can't wait to head down there again in the next 6-8 weeks.
Our experience in the past is that it was much more likely to get up close and pet the babies after the males have left.

the mothers are busy with the newborns for the first few weeks...it doesnt have much to do with the males present or not. But often in January,
pregnant females are friendly with the pangas or mating whales who arent ...ahem...busy! January is great for seeing mating behaviour, birthing and
young babies.
