Where in BCS are you looking? All oxxo stores carry Ciel in 20 litres, you can buy it off a truck delivered to your door, or Santorini is another choice. About 23mxp per. in la Paz.

Not everybody. I know locals who have been drinking tap water all their lives. It all depends on what your system is accustomed to unless the water is seriously polluted

Yup, what Dennis said. I have a Mexican friend who said he had been drinking the water all his life....then the bottled water companies came and said tap water was unsafe. Now he drinks bottled. That figures.

I brush my teeth in the morning ( the ones I have left) and take my medication with water out of the tap here in Loreto and never had an issue.

Bottled water and purified ice is available in every little and big store along and close to Highway #1.

To find purified water in Baja should be the least of any concerns you may have.

Clarify the waters

Okay

Let me clarify the waters and rephrase my inquiry.

On my last camping trip to Baja I saw some coin operated water machines somewhere.

Does anyone know how they work or where there might be one in Baja Sur?

We back country camp and need to fill our containers somewhere about halfway trough our one month trip.

Generally find beer too filling.

dispensing water

We've tried to stay away from those dispensing machines at the markets and other places - when do you suppose they were last cleaned?

Cleaned properly? I don't really know what "cleaned properly" means but it sounded good when I typed it.

Rather spend a little more and have better odds with the gallons.

Every few blocks in local neighborhoods, (Everywhere in BCS), Agua Purificada stores filter tap water, and dispense in a five gallon garafon, (8 to 12 pesos using your bottle). Thorough process, multiple filters, (iodine, charcoal), and ultra-violet light exposure, so pure your plants would likely not survive long due to lack of minerals. If you need the bottle, buy for 100 p.
Almost more common than depositos now.

You can buy a plastic, 5 gallon garrafon almost anywhere and get it filled at any agua purificada place.

Also sold at ferreterias and stores are manual plastic pumps that fit onto the garrafon (make sure it fits your garrafon, the neck size varies). These pumps are fast and easy to fill other containers, like canteens or 1 gallon containers.

I find it easier to carry water in the 5 gallon (actually 19 liters, I guess) garrafon and fill other containers. Maybe buy a couple 1 gallon containers, plus the garrafon and use the gallon containers for everyday use. Then, fill them as needed from the garrafon.
