Time estimate Puertecitos to Punta Chivato/Mulege?

Anyone have an estimate on how long it would take to drive Puertecitos to Punta Chivato in a late model 4x4.

I want to make sure I get there before dark

Thank you

I did it 6 months ago, in the summer with longer daytime hours. You don't need 4WD. Only 23 unpaved miles and much of that graded road is part of the new highway construction access going on now. Start early!

Puertecitos to Gonzaga: 45 miles/ <1 hr
Gonzaga to Hwy. 1: 35 miles/ 1-1.5 hr depending on trucks blocking road.
Hwy. 1 & 5 Jcn (Chapala) to Mulegé: ~300 miles/5-6 hours depending on military inspection delays, stops along the way.

Remember, you lose an hour going into Moutain Time Zone at the Eagle Monument/ State border

...seems ambitious. ...and naive to think that no surprises would pop up in the way of such a plan.

Having just done that drive a few days ago in a Yukon XL, I concur with David's time estimates. The unpaved section is in pretty good shape, we made it in under an hour.

You may already know this, but the road from Palo Verde on HWY 1 to Punta Chivato can take anywhere from less than 15 minutes to an eternity depending on what you drive, how you drive, road conditions, water level in the estuary (where the eternity comes in), and where in PC you are going.

Driving a Jeep to the Hotel takes about 15 minutes if you are driving fast and the road is good, with no water in the estuary. Driving a Jetta may take an hour for the same distance.

I know you said you have a 4x4, but there is a big difference between a Jeep and a BMW 325 x-drive, for example...

Sorry, those are actual times, no crazy speeds no drifting corners. If your trip includes 8-10 pee breaks, several cave painting stops, and a couple of flat tires (because you drive on bald or under-inflated tires, or just run over stuff)....yes, the trip will take longer.

There is also a chance that the military inspector will accuse you of transporting marijuana, too! LOL (make sure your floor mats are clean)

.

.....I don't think it's a great idea to set-up the expectation of covering 1/3 of baja event-free in one single dawn-to-dusk period,,especially on one's first drive, in fact I consider it somewhat irresponsible.
The baja we've all come to know and love is full of surprise adventures,,that's one of the 'thrills'! Surely an event-free drive for a first timer would be the exception rather than the rule!?
How many small towns on this high-crown, potholed, shoulder-less highway? How many little surprises await such a first-time driver?
IIRC,,,the OP posted in another thread about coming down for an extended period,,,so I gotta ask...WHAT'S THE HURRY? Why do you need to make it to Mulege within ~36 hrs of arrival in your holiday country? There's so much you'll miss on the way as you hustle down Baja to start your vacation.
Why not start your holiday as soon as you leave your driveway back home,, relax,,stop and look, take pictures,,stop for fish taco's, don't sweat it when there's a 40 minute lineup at a checkpoint or a diversion or an accident from some gringo that had the expectation to make miles that day! As you drive by you can think....'mann,that coulda been me'!

Happy Holidays :D;)

Awesome advice!
Enjoy the Journey and not just the Destination!

See:
Gonzaga Bay with a lunch at Alfonsina's
Have a beer at Coco's Corner, a Baja icon since the early 1990's
Spend a day at Bahia de los Angeles (see the museum there, have lunch on Guillermo's beachside tables, check out La Gringa...)
Drive to Mission San Borja on your way back to Hwy. 1 using a non-paved road through Baja's finest cactus garden.
See the rock art site of Montevideo.
The mission is magnificent and the furthest-north stone mission church in Baja... It will blow you away to see it out there in the middle of "nowhere".

These are just a few sites that make Baja such a fascinating place.

....ha!..^^....gotta say I haven't seen half those sights!
......guess I've been in too much of a hurry :o

...don't forget San Felippe,,a fine little town in it's own right,,likely where you'll get to considering when you'll be crossing the border according to your other thread,,,and accounting for murphy's law.
.....I wonder how many first timers -don't- get offtrack first time across the border?

......I once watched my mum plan a two week roadtrip with her new family,, a 2nd marriage with young kids.....she had EVERYTHING planned out right down to who drove ,,who did dishes,,and of course where they'd stay and what they'd see.
......After the trip,,she recounted the 'adventure' by pulling out the itinerary and reviewing her notes of 'what went wrong' :o
........I'm glad I missed that trip,,,and that was just in the states!

......yer wanna make Chucacabra laugh!?.....just make solid plans!!!:lol:

Enjoy journey and don't rush to the destination. We have enjoyed all the side roads and visited the incredible sites off hwy 1 which too many people pass by in the hurry to get to their destination. BajaNomads is a great resource to explore and use for all those great side roads.

The OP asked how long would it take to drive from point a to point b.
he did not ask for your input on sidetrips. The answer I gave(pretty much the same as DK's) was accurate. Sorry its not how you do it, but that's not what he asked.

enjoy your trip... let this guy discover his.
