3rd Census at Laguna Ojo de Liebre...over 1,000 whales!!!

On Jan.24th, the 3rd census was taken. There are now 621 adults and 478 calves...meaning 192 more calves are in the lagoon in only 6 days for a grand
total now of 1099 gray whales!!! here are the stats so far this season.

 Jan 12 adults 376 calves 208 total 584
 Jan 18 adults 523 calves 286 total 809
 Jan 24 adults 621 calves 478 total 1099

Our last trip was sweet as the calves were coming around for a good look at us and the human kids!

Here is Cloud with her baby who is getting very curious about humans!

the new pier is so nice...no more wading in the water at low tide!

the ejido fixed up the palapas real nice and are now charging $10 a night.

it was party time in the campground as many ejido folks camped out last weekend...as always, lots of food, kids and loud music for dancing! check out
this cool BBQ design they brought!

i will be moving to the lagoon Whale Magic Tour base camp this weekend so stop in and visit if you are in central baja...just ask at the lagoon gate
for Shari!

Looks wonderful! Thanks for the posts.

So great to see so many baby whales. Good sign... they are managing the El Nino well.

Enjoy! Please give my regards to Marta, Leopoldo and other staff, and regrets for not being able to return.

Great photos. I just don't understand why potential whale watchers would go anywhere else than Ojo De Liebre. Closest to the US border, and seemingly
the place to mingle with the wonderful creatures.

We've been to San Ignacio and Mag Bay, but have never had a better experience than Ojo De Liebre.

How is the current census holding up with the warmest January on record. When will the herd head north?

How does the 2015-16 census compare with recent previous years? Was wondering if the warmer than usual Pacific Ocean affected their food sources
(reportedly that had affected sea lion food sources and there were more than usual starving sea lions).
Also, when is the last whale watching date, i.e., the road still open to Ojo de Liebre?

The last two years, we've gone down mid to late March and had whales around. With that said, the season was close to ending. We plan to return this
year around March 22.
