Instuctions to get MX Topos

Back in the day when we wanted a Mexican Topo map we trekked to Mexicali or Tijuana to the INEGI office and bought the paper maps. INEGI is the
Mexican equivalent of the USGS here in the states. INEGI is the abbreviation for Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Gergrafia.
Now days all the maps and data are all digital and one has to download for the map of your choice. Further all the maps are available with the new
Datum ITRF92. This is a good thing because ITRF92 very closely matches WGS84 which is what Google Earth uses. This means we do not have to convert the
Datum when plotting on a paper map from a place found on GE. This is a very good thing. The INEGI web site still has the old datum maps so be careful
what you download. Be more careful if you still use the Almanac because it uses the “Mexico NAD1927 datum”. You will find various datums on your GPS.
Be sure to choose WGS84.
So here is the drill to get your own maps at no cost and keep them on your computer for instant reference.
INEGI Map Download instructions
Stay with me in Spanish. If you use Chrome browser then it will automatically translate, I will show the English words in quotes.
Go to http://www.inegi.org.mx/
Mouse on Geografia “Geography”
Mouse on Temas “Themes”
Mouse on Topografia “Topography”
Click on Cartas topograficas “Topographic maps”
In the clave “search” box enter your map number like H11B36
Click Consuiltar “SEARCH”
Bottom of the new page are your map choices
List will show links for PDFs, Geo PDFs, GIFs and TIFs. The Geo PDFs are layered and different features can be turned on and off when you view them in
Acrobat. Older PDFs are raster files, newer ones are vector. The vector files are infinitely scalable, the raster ones are not and the image quality
degrades the larger they are viewed.
Click on the PDF symbol for the newest version (2003)
Click on Discarga “Discharge”
Then click on the PDF and let it load
When the file is done loading use the usual PDF feature to save the file to the location on your computer where you like it.
If you want a paper map then copy the PDF to a CD and take the CD to the print shop and have them print it in color on “D” size paper.
TIP: Get up to speed on making notes and lines on your PDF files. Then you can show your buddies what and where things are on the topo.

Couple of years ago I went to the INEGI office in La Paz and using their key obtained large paper topo maps from them for a small fee. Also when I
identified other map sections I wanted, they burned a number of them on a DVD for my use (again a small fee). Using the DVD I could cut and paste a
smaller section that interested me and print out that much smaller map. So...these services still available from INEGI?

Nothing is available like getting printed maps in Mexicali. I suspect The TJ office will follow suit when they run out of inventory.
Once I got thru the heavy security there the nice ladies in the office showed me the internet drill I just posted and then for no charge another lady
made me a CD with only partially what I needed. Then she gave me directions to a local print shop to get the paper maps.
Meanwhile just follow the instructions and download the PDF files you want and yes the topo stuff posted on this forum is capture of the downloaded
PDFs. Do you need instructions for that exercise?
I am paying around $12 for printed PDF maps here in San Felipe. Cost was around $20 in El Centro at the print shop there. Quality in SF was poor. El
Centro quality was excellent. I guess I need to shop around for better prices. I chose a format size similar to what INEGI used to provide. They used
a paper size that is not in stock at the two places I used.

Can you down load these maps on your phone and use them to navigate?
I am thinking about getting a new phone, after 10 years or so. If navigation was important to you, would you chose an Iphone 6? What device would
be better for downloading and navigation? Mpas of Baja and Copper Canyon that is.

then select which file format you want from the next page(s)

Do they have a usable map guide to know which one to open up... like the hand made one Paul did of Baja Norte... for Baja Sur, too?
