Great news. The statement about saving four hours must be on the referenced Mexicali to Laguna Chapala route.

With all the manpower we saw last week, I believe the time line.

And they are moving right along. Travel the road 4-6 times a year, and it is noticeable.

Also agree, the real work is the road bed, the pavement is like painting the house that was built. I look forward to reading about the folks who leave San Felipe but never make it to the "new" pavement thinking they can turn it up on a fully paved road.....;D

It may be worth the drive from Ensenada to San Felipe just to take Mex 5 to Baja Sur.
Mex 1 is OK, but the topes, municipality driving, and two mountain ranges slow the pace quite a bit.

The real work in this case is the bridges and culverts as they take a direct route through the hills.

In other news, the Mexican government announced Pemex will be converting to ULSD by 2010.

I have no opinion on the road, just pronouncements by the Mexican government, at times.

I still have a vivid memory from a few years back when they started the paving, Two ladies in Gonzaga, who had their places on one year leases, leaned toward us and firmly stated that the paved road would NEVER happen or at least not in their lifetimes. I wonder if they are still topside.

I cant wait for it to be complete. I have been to Baja once since I moved to Sonora and that was on the expensive ferry for a trip out to Bahia Asuncion.

Once it's complete, I hope to be able to start spending some time along the Pacific in late October/early November.

X-ray machines at all crossings except Tecate. We got examined at Mexicali East last week. It's the new normal I suppose.

They are still building the x-ray machine in Otay Mesa.

Mexicali east:
Northbound has a facility XRay. Been there since last year. Any rig with a truck on a trailer or a box trailer goes thru the X Ray and suffers the delay in secondary. The lanes on the Mexican side are very narrow and squeeze with other vehicles is tight. Doable but great care is required.

Southbound - sure enough the Mexicans have a new XRay. Based on my observations it is only used for cargo driven thru by way of customs. (Not the commercial entrance). I see smaller box trailers and pickups with stuff and small motor homes going thru that XRay. All these rigs using the XRay were in the customs area because they were importing stuff. Still more similar rigs not entering the customs area were passing thru like the passenger cars.

No XRay in Algodones. Probably because nobody tries to go that way with a trailer or big rig. - Ha

Correct no XRay in Tecate same deal as Algodones. - A very tight fit I got thru once with a flatbed with a car on it and I took up two slots and the Border guy said I was lucky to get thru. I wont do that again.

That's what we say about friends who are afraid to go to Mexico - it's "self-selecting": they're happy they stay in the US, and we're happy they stay in the US.

We're in total agreement here: I'm happy that you will be on Highway 1, and you're happy you'll be on Highway 1.
