July Loreto Dorado trip
Hard for me to believe but it's been close to 15 years since I've been to Loreto. Six of guys are flying down in early July for dodos; from LAX on
Alaska.
We have three super pangas reserved with Daniel Talamante, 2 guys per panga. Here is what I THINK I should take (two of the guys have no gear at
all). Is this too much? What is useless and I should leave at home and what am I missing? Oh, not in the photos is a new cedar plug, natural.
One of our group only fly fishes and I am taking my 10 weight as well. A local fly shop does Loreto trips and they have told me to stop by in a few
weeks and they will look over my meager collection of flies - some help there would be welcome.
Finally, last year two of the guys took their freshwater bass rigs (20-25#) and had a ball so we are all doing that also. 30# braid with 30# mono
leader via a FG knot. This is my 'inshore' set-up and to be honest, I'm a little skeptical. I assume that a dodo of any size would totally smoke my
little Penn Sargus level wind.

Which size is the Sargus? If it is a 4000 or up, I would bring it. 13 lbs of drag is not ideal, but you could play a pretty big fish in with that. The
5000 have 20 lbs of drag.
Nothing casts like a spinning reel, that's for sure.
How will you fish those small hoochies? Are you making daisy chains or dragging them individually? Nice to have those as an option if the fish are
shying away from larger baits.
I'm not seeing many castable lures in your arsenal except those popper-like plugs. Bring some chrome lures in the 2-4oz size that you can retrieve
fast just under the surface. Kastmasters will work, Krocs are too slow. Something like the old Diamond jigs or the Toro Tamer Wounded Swimmers or
Megabaits. Dorado are schoolies, as you know. Nice to locate them and cast to them. Light iron can work, too. Nice if these lures have single hooks
rather than trebles.

Fishin for the Mission tournament is going down July 8-9 this year.
The ramp will be busy early morning.......shade tents and cold beer at the ramp both days.
Yesterday, June 18....the surface water temp was 77 in most spots.....but the air is heating up......at 95 today Sunday.
Those water temps need to get to above 78.....that should be any day now.
Water color a little off yesterday.....not full on green but not clear blue either.
Day in and day out......a 4" or 6" PINK, PINK and white or PINK and blue hoochie should be your top color choice.....
Rig it with a 3/8th oz egg sinker in the hoochie head....rig a single hook to terminate at the end of the Hooch.
Troll at about 8mph so the Hooch breaks the surface every once in a while...
Notice the emphasis on PINK........I know.....I live here year round and have had more strikes on PINK than any other color.
Good luck.
BTW.....your tackle selection looks good......but load up on some PINK 4" or 6" hoochies and save the big bucks you would spend on those high dollar,
abalone shell rigs.

Hola,
please remember, you cannot take reels loaded with line in a carry on and also, you can't carry on jigs with hooks.
looks like you're pretty well set up.
good luck,
BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

It's a level wind, I don't think Penn makes them anymore, at least it's not on their site. FFO was dumping them a few years ago, they are very nice
reels. I have caught firecracker yellows and 5-ish # bass and it handles those fine.

Dali-- Thanks for the report! I can't seem to find the usual fishing reports-- Like Pam's. Dorado in this year?
I'm going down in late July.
Desert Rat-- Is that a new restriction? I've been carrying full reels in my carry-on for about 15 years now. Never had a problem. US TSA, customs or
Mexican customs?
Thanks--

We have been in Loreto for 3 weeks. No local dorado being caught. Know of a few being caught at the 30-30. No sardinias at the marina. No sargasso to
be found. Water temp today ranged from 75 to 78 degrees. I've looked north and south and haven't found the dorado yet. Found roosterfish, amberjacks
but no dorado.

Thanks, Rhintransit & Fishindad!
Not too encouraging, but I have a couple more weeks for them to show up.
Any marlin & sails?
