| Southbound crossing

 Saturday 30july, 9:15am.

Sister is reporting that the line of cars to go southbound at chaparral is backed up 1 1/2 miles from the gates. Only about 5 gates open.

Crossed at 4:30 p.m. yesterday (Friday). One hour to cross and another hour in secondary from bringing in some TREX decking.

 Udo:
Did you drive though and not stop to declare first? If that is what you did, did they send you back to declare and pay duty?

Huh? First time we crossed at the new border facility, we quickly were helped by the IMM officer who took our payment for our FMMs. Never had to face
an inspection when we left their office. On subsequent trips, we were having to wait a bit for an inspection. Took maybe 15 minutes before we were
cleared. The idea of waits over an hour blows my mind.

Crossed around 9:30 am with a three car caravan. Couldn't believe the backup and the small number of lanes open. We stopped for visas for some of
the passengers. They were quickly issued, but then we had to cut back into line to drive through customs. I've seen more lanes open before 6 am on
week days. But so few open lanes on Saturday???

I think Woody nailed it. Having crossed through there a number of times with almost zero delay, I just have to think this is middle finger to the US.

Crossed SB @ SY a few weeks back on a Saturday morning (around 9am). It took me over an hour. All lanes were open, not many people were getting
stopped, but it was just a massive amount of humans trying to get through at once. First time ever though getting delayed going SB ever.

In that pre-Google Earth and social media epoch, The Code was adhered to. It was based on a simple verity: if a locale had been transformational for
you, and you had put the hard yards in to get there and to learn it, to know it, why in gods name would you broadcast the news, thus ruining the
future experience not only for yourself, but for future adventurers? |

If I remember correctly, the freeway approach to the Chaparral gate was supposed to be changed to eliminate many problems, including the 90 degree
nightmare turn at the line. This was agreed upon by the US, but "funding" became an issue.
Perhaps this has something to do with the issue today.

And wipe out the duty free shop and the parking lot?

Just don't see the need to change that sharp turn.

I emailed Darrel Issa over a week ago asking why the northbound booths weren't double staffed and stating that it took 3 hours for someone to cross
who left his house in TJ at 2AM.

 No response.

But yesterday I did receive some BS campaign propaganda back from Issa.

Never requested to be on his list.

I hope the bastard loses his re-election bid.

Juan Vargas is the congressman who represents the border area. I doubt Issa gives a rat's patootie about border crossing times.

 http://vargas.house.gov/

I just sent him an email asking when they are going to staff the second booths that have been added to each line.

I know this thread started out about the southbound crossing but I don't think the US Gov can do anything about those delays. The southbound
bottleneck is in Mexico.

| Only at San Ysidro?

Are either the Otay Mesa and/or Tecate S/B having long waits?

SANDAG and Caltrans plan to eventually eliminate the sharp right hand and then left hand turn into Mexico. The necessary land will be condemned. At
the same time more northbound lanes will be added where the old Mexican Customs building sits abandoned. This is the reason Mexican Customs were
moved further west -- to make room for more northbound lanes in Mexico.

Anyone who remembers the crossing before the interstate freeways were built knows how much the crossing has changed. It's only a question of time and
money. We can hope the wait isn't too long.

 Not true.

He did an incredible job of wasting taxpayer money while never finding any major corruption or getting to the bottom of any significant scandal.

You're right, he didn't find the 30,000 emails, many with top secret status!
