Tecate?

Hi all,

Is anyone here living in Tecate?

Just trying to gauge the likelihood of finding a nice apartment there, versus the more populated, expat friendly hot spots like TJ or Ensenada.

Hubby doesn't qualify for SENTRI due to a system glitch that says he overstayed by a few days in the USA over 9 years ago (he did not! But try fixing that issue with officials! LOL) so we're exploring other options that would allow us to cross easily and frequently (as Canadians) into the US to shop, enjoy entertainment, take road trips, etc.

Thanks in advance!

SENTRI

You can file an appeal with SENTRI. Many of their original decisions are overturned, especially if you have proof....definitely worth it!!

This rental just showed up in Punta Banda (Ensenada):

HOME SITS ON A HILL OVERLOOKING ENSENADA BAY, BEAUTIFUL VIEW AT NIGHT OF THE CITY LIGHTS. TWO BEDROOM. TWO BATH CABIN SET UP FOR A COUPLE OR SINGLE PERSON. LARGE ROOMS AND HUGE WRAPAROUND PORCH. GREAT PACIFIC OCEAN VIEWS FROM THE FRONT PORCH. FULLY FURNISHED. IN A GATED COMMUNITY, CAMP 7.
RENT FOR SIX MONTHS OR LONGER. $600 PER MONTH.

Thanks! We've considered it, and he has heard that 10 years is a "magic number" so this summer he will make one more application. If he gets denied, we'll appeal at that point for sure. You never know, right?!

As it is, he holds a Canadian passport and we cross from Ontario into NY willy-nilly for shopping and dinner, so he has definitely been developing an excellent track record of "behaving" which might help.

Unfortunately, there's not much "proof" of the initial error that happened so many years ago. It's really hard to convince them of an error - they probably hear it every 5 minutes. In HIS case, it WAS an actual error... But probably 9 times out of 10, there was really an overstay or misbehaviour. Ah well.

Ensenada will probably be another place to check out. The drive to Tecate to cross is about the same drive as to TJ, without the traffic (bonus!)

QUESTION: Are all the roads around there safe to be driving during the day from a criminal activity perspective? These are mainly the 2/2D to TJ and Mexicali, and 3 through wine country that I am asking about. I know the 1D is well used and generally considered safe.

Okay, but for those not wishing to go out of their way to reach the end game sooner...

Look. I realize that you all probably get enough "is it safe?!" questions that you roll your eyes. But don't let that desensitize you to the fact that there's a spectrum of comfort from "just like driving around the USA/Canada" to "why on earth would you drive around there unless you're just ASKING for trouble?!" and it's reasonable for someone to want to know where on the spectrum the highways around a place they're considering moving to fall.

Nobody is asking if it's perfectly safe. There's an assumption of risk on ANY highway. But as drivers in Canada and the US, we aren't used to worrying about crime on the highways. We're also used to law enforcement being "good guys" not "bad guys" so it ISN'T an unreasonable question.

Only paid mordita once there, but the process was safe.

He kept his 9mm in the holster, though he did unsnap the strap, saw that in the sideview mirror.

Really, if you don't drive around a lot at night, is just latino-hectic OK traffic. Main issue is drunk drivers at night, no different than stateside.

I find it safe enough driving the roads around Tecate. Take the usual precautions. In Tecate itself be careful to come to a complete stop at stop signs. There has been a rogue cop hanging near the main police station on the road that goes east of the zócalo and then loops around to go to the border crossing. Watch the stop signs in the areas just before turning west along the border toward US Customs.

Relative to commuting to usa, You inquired if tecate roads are safe?
Hwy 94 is a deadly hwy. high speed, no center divider. And a casino just opened in jamul, so DUI drivers on hwy just increased.

Rural hwys in mexico are prob more dangerous than 94, given the narrower shoulders and relative lack of maintenance and signage.

It's a long way to a decent shopping center from Tecate. Living in Ensenada, driving to Tecate to cross to shop or for entertainment in US "frequently" seems inconvenient (or with added gas, not cost-effective). Maybe consider modifying routine so you're not crossing so often.

Yeah, but....going on 94 to Otay Lakes Road puts you in Eastlake. Every store known to civilized man is within a couple of miles on Eastlake Parkway. Can't give mileage, but it's around twelve miles from Tecate. Another five miles down the road [which changes its name to telegraph Canyon], and you hit the 805.
