last minute advice for quick 4-day trip to baja from SD
Hi Folks,
we're a group of six meeting in SD on March 22nd for a 4 day break on the beach. we plan on bussing it down to baja or would y'all recommend looking
into car rentals? we're a bunch of grad students with a limited budget.
looking for suggestions for a decent town on the baja side to spend four days where we could have the option of being beach bums, go kayaking,
snorkeling, hiking or biking. we simply looking to take a break from our boring grad school lives. any suggestions for recommended budget
accomodations would be great too.
we're hoping to avoid the spring break craze but realize that our limited days and lack of planning might force us to join the masses.
anyhow, any suggestions would be appreciated greatly!

pretty much all the beaches are going to be crazy with spring break type people I would suggest going inland and camping in the mountains.
Baja has at least 2 sides witch do you prefer?

That's kind of a tough one
don't know what you mean by the "Baja side", I suspect you mean the Sea of Cortez side rather than the Pacific side. In any event, the closest place
that has the things you want to do is probably Bahia de Los Angeles, but that would cost you a day of travel on each end leaving only two days. At
that time there will be lots of gray whales in the Pacific calving lagoons, the closest to the border is Scammons (Ojo de Liebre) which is adjacent to
the town of Guerrero Negro. That will cost you a long day of travel on each end also, but the experience of seeing the whales in that environment
would be unique and unforgettable. Beyond that I am out of ideas. You can get to Rosarito in an hour from San Diego and Ensenada in about an hour
more. They have nice beaches (cold water) but will be loaded with spring break loonies. Good luck whatever you do,

Transportation to Coyote Cal's or L.A. Bay will be the problem... I suggest San Felipe... not the quiet Baja escape during Spring Break, but the best
for you to have college-type fun for 4 days vacation.

David is correct
You put too many limits (time, mode of transport, etc.) to really experience good Baja stuff.
San Felipe will give you a taste and fill some of your requests.
Anything else.... might as well go to Venice Beach or to Coronado and drink Coronas....

What about tent camping around Estro? Might be nice. The hotel is a bit much on a Hoilday. Just an Idea???? Keep a close Eye on everything you own!!

Spring break in San Felipe is nothing compared to Samanta Santa - Holy Week - the week preceeding Easter. 15,000 + nationals converge on the town as
it has the great beaches, and the Shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Many come to pay homage to the Virgin and get a suntan. The beach at the
malecon will be completely covered with the tents of the campers. Sometimes tents between parked cars on the street. South of town where the highway
crosses a low spot, the tents come on the edge of the pavement. If you come down be prepared for the crush.
On the way down from Mexicali, there are a couple of points set up to treat emergencies. They usually (police) stop all cars coming into town
somewere near the arches and any drunk drivers are arested and cars impounded. As the people are rather exhuberant, there are accidents. Some years
a scoreboard is placed near town showing the number of arrests, injuries and deaths.
And don't judge our town by this one week. It's pretty great most of the year.

Ya gotta love a country....
.....that still allows beach camping. I'm tempted to break out my Eureka! Equinox and join 'em.
BTW, the term "Spring Break" can now describe any number of about 6 weeks (including the Holy week), depending on your schook district. I was in
Jamaica a couple years back and there were college kids from Minnesota who were on break the first week in March. A quarter, rather than semester,
system.

You could probably tell they were from Minnesota by their fur lined bikinis. I don't think many Minnesota kids think of Baja for break?
