Good thing the environmentalists saved this endangered bird.

Cool! Km. 74 is about 6,500' up and by the entrance to Los Manzanos (a former campground, apple trees, and an oak grove). La Cienega de Soto rental cabin is just past Km. 74.

Wow that rental cabin is ...$188/night. Way out of my price range. I'll have to stay in the Park.

It is a full or big family-size cabin. I chatted with the owner on his Facebook page about it and other cabins I saw them building: www.facebook.com/lacienegadesoto/
On Nov. 1, 2017:

"Hello Mr. David yes we have only one cabin for 9 people, kitchen two bedrooms, and other things can you see on the Facebook.
The other side of the highway it's a family ranch (not for rent)."

One of the few things I don't mind my taxpayer money going to.

Great work by some organization to bring them back from the brink of extinction.

In 1982, there were less than two dozen Condors left alive, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service concluded that the only way to save the species from extinction was to undertake a program of captive-breeding to increase its population.

The history:

Also, proposed changes by the Congress to the Endangered Species Act, signed into law by President Nixon, are in the news this past week.

I grew up in Fillmore, CA. They established the condor sanctuary nearby in Hopper Canyon (great wild trout fishing at the time). Used to see them once in a while years ago before they were first taken away for captive breeding, then finally reintroduced years later. An amazing success story.

Don't count on seeing that kind of humanity from our government ever again. Not even towards citizens less fortunate.

You may enjoy Graham Mackintosh's book, Nearer My DOG to Thee... all about the San Pedro Mártir and the condor program is detailed.
