Paddleboard surfing?

Just returned from a week at Maui and about 90% of the surfers were using standup paddle boards with a paddle. This is in front of the resorts/condos. However, when we drove to more remote spots, nearly all were standard boards, no paddleboarders.
This must be a tourist/beginner thing?

If there are waves, you surf...no waves, SUP. Whatever it takes to get in the water :D Most of the resorts are in areas with a lack of good waves. Especially Maui (kaanapali/Lahaina). Hence a lot of SUP. Really took off after locals were SUP’ing between Lahaina and Lanai.

The paddle can also be used as a weapon to secure a spot in the line up!
