Accident in Rosarito- Desparate for help
My cousin's son was seriously injured in an accident on Rosarito Beach on the night of March 20th. He was camping on the beach and was run over by a
Jeep. That is all the information we know. He was life flighted to San Diego and is in critical condition. They had to remove the top of his skull
to relieve brain swelling and he has two broken legs, along with other major injuries. We still don't know if he will make it.
I emailed the Secretary of Tourism today to see if we could get any information. If anyone could give me any information on who to contact to find
out about the accident, it would be greatly appreciated. If anyone knows anything about the accident it would also be greatly appreciated.
We are in Central Calif and his mother is at his bedside in the hospital. He is only 21. This is a parent's worst nightmare.
We will take a trip down to Rosarito if it would do any good, but would like to know where to start to find information.

What a nightmare. Is there any chance that the Jeeper may have not known they ran over the boy?

I don't want to go to Rosarito. I know that this sounded like some stupid gringo when I posted. We go to Baja about every year to fish, we spent
Christmas this year at Punta Pescadero. I want heaven to be just like that...
His parents are divorced and he got with a fight with his father and took off. His mother didn't even know where he was. She would really just like
to know some information.
Money is not the issue here. She would like to know how he was found, who was with him, where he was, etc. She does know that there was a delay in
life flighting him out because he is half Mexican. He doesn't speak a word of Spanish. I know for a fact that this was the first time he has been in
Mexico. He is a good kid.
I know sleeping on the beach is stupid. It is spring break and kids seem to check their brains at school. I told my son he wasn't going anywhere on
spring break until he was 40!
He is not conscious and we don't know when he will regain conscousness, if ever. The tires ran over his head and his legs. The sand was the only
thing that kept from instantly killing him.
There really isn't much we can do for him and I thought if we could get some answers it would comfort his mother. My husband was raised in Chula
Vista and knows that area well. He doesn't know I posted here and would probably be livid.
We are a close but small family and she is about the only family I have left. As soon as I can get away from our ranch, I am going down to be with
her, her sister and daughters are with her now.

If it were me in your shoes I would hire a private investigator to git the info you need. there are a few that specialize in the northern Baja aria
and are good at getting facts out of the Mexican authority's.

Perhaps the Life Flight people could help by pointing you toward someone, like where did the call come from and by whom. You could also call the U.S.
Consulate in TJ and the Mexican Consulate in San Diego. Bruce has probably the best solution in using a private investigator. It would seem to me that
the Mexican police would have info on this because of the injury and the resources needed to get him back across the border.

I just talked to a customer from there and they saw an article in the local paper about this accident. I don't know the name of the paper but maybe
Keri or some one from there can find it and post it here.

this young man recovers.

Cowboy mom, I'm sure if you relay to his mother that he was run over by a person operating illegally on the beach, it'll be a great comfort to her.
And if he wakes up, don't forget to tell him it wasn't "good" to not sleep next to a structure.
Spoken in jest, of course. These would do about as much good as pointing out the obvious; Rosarito is a haven for yahoos of every stripe, and from
north of the border we contribute our share of them.
Hope his recovery is complete. Please let us know.

Accident in Rosarito- Desparate for help
His name is Joseph Escalante and he is at Mercy Hospital in San Diego.
I talked to his mother late last night and the American Consulate has gotten involved. We now know it happened in from of a restaurant and he was
laying on the beach with a girl. She was killed instantly. There were two cars racing on the beach, the one that ran over him was a blue Honda
Accord. They found pieces of it at the accident site.
They were suppse to operate on his face yesterday but he wasn't stable enough. They are going to try and do it today and put in a trach. He broke
every bone in his face and had spinal fluid leaking out of his ears when they brought him in. That has stopped. They brought him out of his coma
yesterday for a couple of minutes and he got really agitated, that was a good sign.
If the Consulate doesn't come up with any answers, we will hire the PI. Thank you, that was a great idea.

A Jeep can easily drive on beach sand, but a 2WD Honda Accord with little tires (unless deflated) would have a harder time. Racing?
The PI here on Baja Nomad lives in Ensenada and works on insurance cases all over Latin America... Not sure if he is available for this. I will be
happy to email him with a link to this thread.

4:54 p.m. March 22, 2005
ROSARITO, Mexico - A California woman was killed and another American
was injured when they were run over by a car that was illegally
racing on a beach in this popular tourist town, authorities said
Tuesday.
Amy Ruth Kent, 24, of Santa Barbara, California, died instantly when
she was hit by the car early Sunday, said Lorena Blanco, a
spokeswoman for the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana.
Her companion, Joseph Andre Escalante, was seriously injured and
taken to a hospital in California, Blanco said. No further
information on Escalante was available.
Witnesses told police that the two were resting on the sand in front
of a restaurant when they were hit by a man driving a Honda. The
driver fled the scene and remained at large Tuesday afternoon, said
Emilio Gutierrez, a Rosarito investigator.
Rosarito Beach has been filled this week with students on spring
break, as well as Mexican tourists who are traveling during "Semana
Santa," or the Holy Week leading up to Easter Sunday
