Latest on Hwy 5
From a post on Facebook
Construction of the San Felipe-Puertecitos-Laguna Chapala highway concludes.✅
SCT invested more than 2,553 million pesos in a 12-year period.
The Center of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) in Baja California, reported that with the completion of the junction of the
transpeninsular highway, the construction and modernization works of the San Felipe-Puertecitos-Laguna Chapala highway section are officially
concluded, after 12 years of starting these works.
The SCT invested more than 2 thousand 553 million pesos (mp) in a period of 12 years, of which, the present federal administration injected resources
for 685 mp, to conclude these works, which have a length of 201 kilometers and cross the municipalities of Mexicali and Ensenada.
The works consisted of the construction and modernization of 141 kilometers of new line with a crown width of 9 meters, in addition, 60 kilometers of
the existing road with a width of 7 meters were rehabilitated.
A junction with the transpeninsular highway was also built in the Laguna Chapala area.
With this new highway section, users benefit from lower operating costs, greater safety and significant time savings that fluctuate in 5 hours, for
those seeking to move to Mexicali, or to the south of the state compared to using the traditional route of the transpeninsular through the Pacific.
The SCT considers that this highway will be an economic and social trigger, by increasing activities such as tourism on the beaches to which today
thanks to this infrastructure there are easy access, in addition to the flow of goods and the mining potential that exists in the area. zone.
It is for this reason that the SCT invites the residents of Baja California, as well as national and international tourists, to use this highway,
which has great natural attractions.
One of the guidelines of the present administration is to finish the unfinished works that were abandoned for years, so it was a priority for the SCT
Baja California Center to complete the San Felipe-Puertecitos-Laguna Chapala highway section.

I went through there last week and the crews were still working on the barbwire fencing. All of the concrete posts were in.

LOL Yes, just when we hoped for accuracy in numbers...
They are (or were) off by 3 kms. beginning at (or soon after) Km. 167 (where the paving ended for several years south of Gonzaga. This is where they
bumped up three extra kilometers to the markers! Km. 168 got changed to Km. 171.
In any case, three extra kilometers were stuck in, per the video filming of the highway after it was finished, by 'geoffff'.
The Km. marker near the end, at Laguna Chapala, is 201 now but really should be 198. I guess the construction company needed a tip from the taxpayers?
Before the construction of the last segment, they estimated it right on and had a sign that read San Felipe 198 kms. Then in 2018 after a lot of
construction had been done, there was a Km. 200 marker at the junction with Hwy. 1.
Now, it is Km. 201.
Do remember also that 'Km. 0' is 10 kms. south of the San Felipe traffic circle.
Actual distance from downtown San Felipe to Hwy. 1 is 208 kilometers (129 miles).

Dk,
You really should start a second career measuring roads and painting/posting mile and KM markers. The new income could fund your palm tree sea level
climatology research, fund your missionary trips, and allow you buy a reliable Ford 4x4 to replace that flimsy Toyota!
Woke!

will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.”

John,
No word on that, no new roomers. We know that several properties were purchased by SCT south of the dump road. However nothing changed the people
living on that corridor are still there and living as usual. Last spring I drove that road and there is no sign of the first steps which would be the
survey stakes. The property at the intersection of Dump and Hwy5 is abandoned and falling apart. There are at least two properties just north of that
place that have for sale signs.
The last word in the spring was no progress until the municipality gets approved. It was reported that the bad section from the marina north to the
gas station was going to fall into that category as well??
For sure nothing official.

The highway was finished last February. This news release is six months late.
As for the bet, there was a bit of debate between rts and I a few years ago as to the time to finish. He was sure it would be very soon. I wasn't
convinced.
