Pitaya Hunting

Its that time of year again in Bahia Asuncion in BAja Sur...after some rain the pitayas are ripening in the desert on the galloping cactus. We love wandering around in the desert marveling at the beautiful torote trees & all the species of cactus.

It is best to wear hard soled shoes to avoid getting stuck by a spine! Gloves are nice, a long knife for cutting them & tongs for handling them. The kids love finding the big ripe ones and calling us over to cut them. It's a great family activity and the harvest is soooo yummy!

The dried up pitaya flower is a great substitute for cigarettes...the ranchers have them on hand when they run out of smokes. It has a lovely mild flavor much nicer than tobacco!

Here is a little taste of our hunt!

Thank you David for teaching me how to embed videos...again..haha
