Laguna Diablo / Cañon del Diablo

I'm doing some research and not finding much mention of Laguna Diablo and Cañon del Diablo. Who's been in there? Is it interesting driving? Is the canyon worth hiking up to the pools (supposed to be a 3mi out and back hike)? I'm looking for an interesting off-road route after staying a night on the beach at Perecebu.

I like to explore remote dirt tracks and beaches.

Search using 'Diablo Canyon' and you get a lot of hits.
Wornout had a group trip there last March and you can see his route and several photos on Relive: https://www.relive.cc/view/vKv27339X4O

Azufre Wash (Cañada el Parral or Crazy Horse Canyon) has been my pet route to or from Valle Chico & Matomi Falls, for decades. I have not driven the other, newer route across.
Photos and more of the 'Azufre Wash' in my trip reports. Most recently is Trip #3 from 2017.

Map and photos

This is going from the Valley (Valle Chico), east to the Old Puertecitos Road near the sulfur mine... in Cañada el Parral (Azufre Wash):

From the Valle Chico-Matomi road looking east at the Azufre Wash road.

Looking back west from the east side of the valley.

Just a sample of the cardóns you will see.

Geology in Azufre Wash.

Typical road in the canyon bottom. No grades... you don't realize you are climbing in this 'level' pass thorugh the mountains.

The Old Puertecitos Road (OPR) on the east end is pretty bad now... Used for races and not much else.

The sulfur mine (El Apache) was active from about 1951-1961 and until 1956, was the end of the road going south from San Felipe.

Ugh! I can't drive my van faster than jogging speed on this kind of road.

Hi Scott, In your Diablo Canyon album on Google Photos, you have a pic of a gate with No Trespassing signs. Where is this? Is it meant to keep people out of the canyon? Do I need to get permission to hike in there somehow?

There is a gate between a fenced ranch and their corral. Some have reported a "no Tresspasing" sign there, but last April the gate was closed and there was no sign.
The correct road does not require passing thru the gate. The correct road goes north of the coral. Pretty faint these days since folks like to drive threy an open gate.
If the gate is closed and you honk and wait a ranch lady will show up and open the gate for 100 Pesos per vehicle.
Several years ago a distance before the gate area at the main ranch just after you exit from the bushes. Folks have been stopped there and charged to pass. Not lately.

PaulW - I paid 100 pesos last November. I don't recall going by the little ranch in 2018 or paying anything.
