Tax ..Bringing new in box generator across border
Curious if anyone has an accurate answer
I am bringing a new $2500 generator across the border in calexico. I have receipt showing what I paid. I am pulling into declare items area. Will I
pay 19%,30%, or 36%?
Seems everyone has a different number. Thanks in advance

Often, there is no accurate answer. The duty can change upon the whim of the Aduana agent and/or the border crossing.
But do let us know what they charge YOU. This kind of information is very helpful.
There are very clearly certain categories of items that always seem to qualify for more than the conventional 16%. Marine parts, tires, etc.
Maybe gnukid, who is a whiz at finding official govt info on the internet, can produce the duty schedule from SAT?

tax is now 19%
why is it in a box...if it doesnt work you are screwed
take it out... oil it up...and start it
now just because you have a receipt doesnt mean that is the price
if the agent looks on the phone and sees one for 6000 then you are going to pay that appraisal...if its less then less
...
i dont know if mexicali is a commercial crossing or not
i do know all engines have to go to otay mesa not tecate or tj

Yes. In September the rate was 19%. Up from 16% a year or two ago.

I normally would unbox, run it a bit. Then do things to make it look used.
A quick passs with a rattlecan, wd-40, some dust perhaps some duct tape unnecessarily placed here or there. Cosmetics are everything, this method
also helps prevents theft. I have had success e every time using this method.

When I brought my first one down I also bought a blender. Camping use only. Duct tape is one I'll remember!

So, it appears the "unfavorable" NAFTA rules that the Trump administration insisted on re-negotiating actually raised the duty?

Does anyone know what the penalty is for failing to declare items that should be? Asking for a friend.

That's not near as big as what I had envisioned.
Could easily be for personal use. Throw a tent and an electric skillet in the back of your truck. Or in the unlikely event you are stopped and
questioned about it tell them you are meeting up with friends who have an RV.
Just take it out of the box. Get it running. But cover it up some. Go through the nothing to declare line.

Funny. There are rules? Clue me in.
Not sure I would declare a gen. Not sure I agree with 19% aduana, either. My rules.
Penalty for not declaring? Depends on the Agent you're dealing with. Tax plus fine. Don't worry about it.

New is new.
Used is used.
I don't think there is a "sliding scale" between the two.
So take it out of the box and use it once; you are following the rules when you don't declare it as new.

Always remove box make it dusty . As far as play by the rules no such thing in Mexico . As person that charges you makes up the new rules for that
min. I have always paid less duty at Tecate crossing.

Personally, I'd rather give the 19% to the local business on trips down there. Allows you to over tip and over spend.

Shorty melonhead mcjizzy:
It is quite possible to follow the law and pay your taxes, and also tip well. Why do you think one prevents the other? Since when do criminals tip
better than law-abiding citizens?
