Mexico on the brink
April 4th, 2005

CIA director Porter Goss wasn't kidding when he put Mexico in with Venezuela, Haiti, Bolivia and Nicaragua as the most unstable countries in the hemisphere. Right now, the potentially dangerous development is political, and may affect us very tangibly in the U.S.

I can?t figure out how americans and canadians keep pumping billions into this timebomb, i guess they like to lose money, my suggestion to many here is, wait until this nation blows, watch in awe as prices drop, and then buy cheap.

Obrador is a former PRIista who has remade a political career on the backs of DF's poor with the help of Slim's money. IF elected he would do the bidding of the oligarchy or spend his term locked in a bathroom at Los Pinos. And if he tried to rally populist support he wouldn't last a week.

Slim may publicly distance himself but I'll bet privately he's still pulling the strings. Guys like him OWN Mexico. Guys like Fox and Obrador only work there.;D

I guess I am muy tonto. I haven't a clue as to what you guys are talking about. I would guess any further revolutions in Mexico would be by the voters and non violent. I do not consider Mexico to be a third world nation any longer. The middle class is growing (albeit, slowly) and I see nothing but progress ahead. I consider Canada money and investment as the threat to Mexico. However, its people are more educated and have a somewhat better standard of living than they did five or ten years ago. The economy seems stable and they have the natural resources to make them successful in the future. I don't think I am looking at Mexico through rose colored glasses---you may disagree with me. Viva la raza.

Jesse....

Right or Wrong....(sometimes both) The reason we "Americans" keep pumping millions into Mexice ect., ect. is that "we" are a culture fomed on that......"give us your poor", we were raised on the "Pledge" Our fathers fought for those rights, and we still fight today, and as hard as it is for me to say.......on one hand I say "stay out of others culture" but, when I see a child being killed because she/he is of a diffrent color than I, or you.....I can't not FIGHT!

Bravo! Debra!

It is sad to think that there are so many people in this World who will not fight for their right to Live!

Sharky, I agree with you that Mexico is a Good country with problems, but I do not think there will be a problem.
I would think that it will contunie to Develop.

Skeeter........My fear for our country and the rest of the world is that WE or US are spoiled! While the rest of the world fights and dies for the rights we take for granted (as our fathers once did...my father and yours Skeeter and YOU!) we are raising a bunch of WHINERS, that don't even think they need to vote! "What good will it do" they ask! Lazy, Spoiled BRATS! People around our world are dying, putting their lives on the line for the right to vote and our children are saying...??????? SPOILED!!!!! We did everything for THEM now what? Can they take care of themselves? Our Planet? It really scares me........

I apoligize to the board for my politcal rant, if I could figure out how to use "U2" on this new format I would have done that

Debra. You are 100% Right and are as concerned and it is not Political rally, it sometimes seems so as that appears in many of the board Posters Words.

Not only are the children being taught to "Fear" and "Don,t Worry the Govt will take Care of You', through the Media, Schools, etc they are taught not to be responsible for their own Acts.

I thnk it is caused by a Lack of Disicpline at an early age. There are many causes. God Help us All!

kid's are spoiled today

Well, here is an excellent topic. Spoiled kids. I say we've really screwed up this generation. (I don't mean just me alone did this) It starts with $5.00 a week & up allowances. (My exwife gave my son of 8 at that time, $20.00 a week for taking out the garbage. Come on. Give me a break. I complained. No good. Drive by most schools, and look at the students parking lots. Some are the parents "extra" vehicle, but many are being bought for the kids, and usually in monthly payments. What happened to walking to school??? Or riding the school bus??? And how many now have credit cards that the folks pay for???? How many kids do you know that go around the neighborhoods offering to mow lawns? Yes, some are so spoiled, they think everything grows on trees besides money.

I only wish many of you could understand spanish very well so you could listen what the Mexican media is saying, basically (and i agree with this) this nation is losing it, in pretty much all areas except macro economics. narco trafficking is unstopable, reforms are stalled, we suffer from a crisis of leadership, the PAN has turned out to be a complete failure, the rich are getting richer and the poor are still poor, and the level of anger and violence is rising everywhere. Just a few months ago the nations top military general said, "if you guys(meaning politicians) insist on driving this nation into the grown, just remember, the military is watching, and we know everything thats going on", that was a very direct warning.

Also many of the nations best political analist, are also saying that this has the potential to get very ugly.

I disagree Dave, if the elite would benefit from Obradors presidency, they wouldnt be spending millions now to get him impeached and off the ballot, besides the business deal that Obrador and Slim made with the remodeling of Mexico city historical center, they have nothing else that ties them togheter.

I think Fox has been good for Mexico.
He should have done more and better but still the country is on the right track.

I agree with Dave that Slim has too much power in Mexico. Telmex is still a monopoly and we all customers are paying for him being the 4th richest men on earth.
