Ferry la Paz insurance question…
Does one need USA as well as mex vehicle insurance to cross over to mainland..? I am aware of the TIP…

US auto insurance is not valid in MX.
Although now it is "required" to have MX insurance, nobody is going to ask for proof.....until it is needed.
A tourist only, driver's license policy is an inexpensive way to go, ($170/yr.).

return. If the policy so states. Click Baja Bound.
Tourist Policies only cover US plates and DLs. If going south of Sonora buy the all Mexico coverage.

Sure of that? I know the Drivers License policy that is sold
by bajabound/discover baja, allows the policy holder
to drive US plated vehicles, liability only. Doesn't mention
one has to list the vehicles one is going to drive, nor the
status of US policies on those vehicles

Only from experience buying full coverage. Liability only policies may not need proof of U.S. insurance.??

Correct, no U.S. insurance needed to purchase a drivers license policy. I have had them for years and years for my Mexico cars.
Policies have different limits so for a few extra $s get the highest limit. Over the years I have noticed a difference in limits and premiums between
the ones that Baja Bound sells and Vagubundos del Mar sells.
Call them both and find out for yourself which one suits you best.

Along the same line, do the numerous So. Dakota plated vehicles
in Baja, owned by Gringo residents, carry US polices?
Don't know if SD registration requires it

You need Mexican insurance in all of Mexico, Baja as well as the mainland. And no, you don't need active insurance in the US or Canada to have valid
Mexican insurance. What you need is current registration.

In 2021 I crossed from La Paz to Mazatlan and then a few days later crossed back over and went back to La Paz. My Jeep was weighed, searched and I was
also asked for all of my paperwork at the BajaFerries office and also when my vehicle was being in processed. Then repeated again when I arrived at
Mazatlan and also again each time I went to get on/off the ferry. So, yes you do need insurance. You will also need proof of ownership of your
vehicle, registration, driver license passport and TIP. And take multiple copies of all of your documents. They are going to need them. Do yourself a
favor and keep all of your paperwork in a zipped up storage portfolio.

SD does not require SD auto insurance or any other proof of insurance coverage for renewing annual registrations. Only requirement is an US address
where the license stickers will be mailed.
Disclaimer - Maybe if you are listed as a SD resident with a SD address, THEN I would think they would require proof of insurance but then I am not a
license insurance agent in the state of SD.
