'Quest of the Lost Santa Isabel' c1964
Just when you think you know about every book on Baja ever written, a surprise like this pops up. A friend alerted me to this being offered on eBay,
and I took a risk, as it didn't say Baja... But what other Lost (Mission) Santa Isabel is there??? It is a fiction story (maybe?), so I will have some
reading to do... I will follow up with the inside title pages for you to see... Here's the cover!:

Anyway, as soon as I opened up the book... my smile got bigger... Baja Spell Checker did notice Ensenada was a bit off the usual wrong way to spell
it.
Anyway, I am jazzed... and Neal Johns will probably be jealous (again)!

I just purchased Jose Joaquin Arrillaga's Diary of his Surveys of the Frontier, 1796 which was translated and pbulished in 1969. Juat got it
yesterday and in skiming thru it saw a brief reference to the lost Mission. I'll look it up and get the exact quote.

Lost Mission?
Arrillaga's expeditions were to locate a suitable site for the next Dominican mission, Santa Catalina. Before getting your hopes up about finding a
lost mission, making reference to a site the Spanish have designated Santa Isabel, such as a spring on the Gulf Coast, does not verify the existence
of a non-existant "lost mission." It may be good material for a novel or legend, but at the same time perpetuating the myth can lead to further damage
to sensitive and fragile cultural/historical resources such as mission ruins or petroglyphs. Go look at the thread on petroglyphs on the Baja
Photography section for some specific and recent instances of idiots defacing petroglyphs and distrubing and stealing artifacts from historic and
pre-historic sites. I don't mind discussions of novels and myths, but only as long as there is a disclaimer to the effect that this is only a story,
there are no lost missions, and don't go out and deface or damage historic sites, as David K. and I have repeatedly stated on this forum. I believe
that the vast majority of people who visit and post on this forum have the right idea, but it takes only one idiot to go out and do serious damage.
