Mood: Pole Line Road postponed due to injury

[*] posted on 4-10-2005 at 10:17 AM

Our group opted for the Ejido Jose Saldana route. According to Neal Johns' route information, " "T", Road north goes to Ejido Jose Saldana and Tres Pozos. Road right, across arroyo, up bank is washed out for 4WD on far side (there may be a way around this washout, it may be OK for bikes), is the Pole Line Road and goes either to La Ventana or El Chinero on Hwy 5. Mileages are for El Chinero - assuming we get past the washout somehow.

Read the trip summary I posted in the 'trip reports' section of this webpage. I will also post a GPS plot-sheet to show you the image visually. Thanks to BX for the data...

we did the pole line road last january. we went right at the T and followed arroyo grande north to a ranch and then went right to la ventana. were doing the pole line road again next week. this time we will do it in reverse. san felipe to canyon diablo then from canyon diablo we want to head north to hwy 3 at Choyall. from there on the map it shows a road north that will take you to arroyo grande this will then take you to the T junction and we head up canada jaquegel. has anyone driven this stretch of road from hwy 3 to the T junction

John, if you're talking about crossing H3 at the bottom of San Matis Pass, the road there has a locked gate fight off H3. 4 years ago, the guy who has a place a mile or so east on H 3 let us in and around to the road. Quite a trip bud didn't get to Arryo Grande.

Hi guys,
Arroyo Grande has a dam built across it a few miles north of where you enter it from the south. It is not possible to drive all the way through.

I did that Route on a M/C several years ago we had to go around a dam and the road was hard to ride some places because of wash outs Then we came out in some ones ranch on the wrong side of a corral they waved us around the yard.
When we got to Mex 3 the gate was locked had to back track and take a wash to the east.
I don?t think it can be done in a 4x4 or atv

arroyo grande

I expected somebody to answer this question, but so far nobody has. I have always wondered, also. My understanding is that it certainly used to go all the way thru, but I am no longer so sure it still does. I have heard that there is a rock dam in arroyo grande, purportedly to block the drug smugglers, and there is no way around it except possibly with motorcycles. I don't personally know, tho. About 3 years ago, we tried to enter arroyo grande from Mex 3 but there was a locked gate just off the highway, so gave up.

If you ever learn anything more about this route, please post it.

I hope somebody will post here, and let us both know. I would think that some of the San Felipe residents would have explored this route.

Page 8 and 9.

Some of the access roads are not revealed in the Almanac, but roughly the road runs east and west from El Jamau pg 8 coordinates U-2-------------to coordinates Y-2 on page 9 down Canada Jaquegel and Canada de Enmedio. This is really wild country. The dotted line in the Almanac may be the approx. alignment------I have no real on the ground personal knowledge.

It's a fine place, and near some pretty nice country. It's been run by a variety of sects over the years, but it seems pretty stable -- and it's open now. For awhile it wasn't. You can camp on the edge of a cliff right above the Pitt River, and there's hot water streaming into it from all over. There's an unimproved spring, Indian Springs, a short walk downstream, and another one just a short drive back into the woods.
