Baja 4-06 (Part 4 of 4): La Lobera

La Lobera is the 'sea lion crater' just north of El Rosario... 3 miles from Hwy. 1 between Km. 47 and 48. New power lines follow the road all the way there. The road is easy 2WD graded, but was very dusty last Sunday!

It is a collapsed sea cave that makes a perfect beach for the lobos (sea lions).

Next to the (future) restaurant at La Lobera is this man made tide pool which will be used to raise lobster and abalone for the restaurant!

In the distance... the farthest point is Punta Baja.

La Lobera has a dynamic seashore and offers great photo and insperational opportunities! Photo looking north...

I hope you enjoyed a look at our short Baja weekend trip.

The peninsula is indeed a magic place, I am constantly amazed at the continued ability it has to fulfill my adventure needs!

The past year I have made several trips to El Rosario (where staying at the Baja Cactus Motel instead of tent camping has almost spoiled me) alone. I have discovered that there are dozens of places near there that offer the kind of things I like (off roading, historic sites, geologic sites, beaches, and the great food is nice, too)

Fantastic trip report you put together here. The photography puts us all right there along with you. Lot's of new construction at La Lobera really surprised me.

Haa you beat me Dk I haven't developed my film jet, in dee is a great place I talk to one of the workers, and he was telling me that they might build palapas for camping,a hiking trail.

La Lobera? Yes, a really cool place and Diamante del Mar property is from there south to La Bocana beach... Can you imagine playing golf along that coastline for dramatic effect!?

Get a digital camera... no more film to develop!!

David, to the best of my knowledge Spiny Lobsters have never been commercially cultivated successfully.. In fact when left in isolated tanks they will sometimes commit cannabalism.

Abalone although successfully cultivated by very few are extremely difficult to raise and involves a complex lab and lifecycle arrangement unless the tank is truly "tidal" that is..
Could be a great "holding tank' I suspect.

To access la lobera, do you go in through El Rosario towards Pta Baja then north? or Go in the dirt at the end of the long straight stretch of hwy past san Quintin? Or either? LOOKS LIKE pta Baja is quite a distance from there..Curious...

Neither... it has its own driveway between Km. 47 and 48 as you climb up towards the Rosario mesa on Hwy. 1. You can't miss it now because of the new POWER LINES and poles along side the road all the way in (3.0 miles/ 5 kms.)... Ignore the keep out sign half way in.

A 20 peso ($US2) parking fee is collected for the day... also camping at additional fee.

Yes, I know the road. I knew I could find it on viva baja, but i get so side tracked by the other cool stuff..... always wondered where that road went..so your saying it does not connect to either north (s.q.) or south(pta baja)? One way in, one way out?
if so that takes some of the fun out of it :yawn:

Well a half mile in, the graded La Lobera road swings left (south) and an older road continues straight (west) to the coast... Never been, but I suspect it is where Ken Bondy goes for some cool photos!?

As for La Lobera exit... nope, it's at the end of the road with cliff coastline north and south. No road north to El Consuelo or south to La Bocana or Punta Baja.

Diamante del Mar may build a road to La Lobera from their sales office... but that is on private land, and you would need connections to have access... IF they build such a coastal road.

We have been out to the sea lion cave several times, but it has been a few years. We can't believe they are building out there and that there are power lines! How stable is that ground out there?

It is truly a beautiful area, and the sea lions are great.
