have fun!

mulegemichael - 11-25-2009 at 08:36 PM

whoa...ok..just take it easy and don't fall for any slick stuff...gosh, what to say?...do your research...you can stay in our guest cottage in mulege for a night if you show up here when ya wanna quit for the day....we're in #54 in the oasis on the river...let us know, mike and roz

Mulegena - 11-25-2009 at 09:25 PM

Hi. I just made the trip myself, and its good.

Stay in El Rosario your first night at Baja Cactus (room 102 if you can get it, one king bed and quiet, $30+/-). Accept Mike & Roz's invite in Mulege the next night and enjoy their wonderful company.

Be cool, keep to yourself on the road with your eyes open and antennae up. Things should go great for you.

fishbuck - 11-25-2009 at 09:45 PM

Just the standard safety rules.
Don't drive at night, don't pick up hitchhikers, keep you gas tank above half, etc...

Mulegena - 11-25-2009 at 11:42 PM

Baja Nuts' advice-- I like muchly. You get a Gold Star.

I've broken all the Basic Rules:

I have run out of gas (in my big, honkin' RV) and was assisted and sent on my way in 1/2 hour. Still, keep your tank full and your eye on your gauges.

I've picked up hitchhikers: last year a lady and her two children were out of money and trying to get north. I made sure they were fed.

I have traveled at night without problem: Be sure of your car and your driving skills and need for sleep.

kissmewillyou - 11-26-2009 at 01:17 AM

Wow i cant believe how quickly i got replies thankyou ! Mike and Roz that's very considerate of you ! I'm going to look up a guesthouse that a friend recommended there - he couldn't recall the name but said he was going to look tomorrow. I know it's real important to be careful and to use my common sense - I guess that applies equally here in the States as it does in Mexico.

I don't know what to say to you Dennis !

As it happens I have an organic cosmetic company called kissmewillyou - i think i'll pass on you though !

And as for my age, lets just say im old enough not to want to tell Y'ALL !!!

BajaNuts - 11-26-2009 at 01:48 AM

And PS~ WELCOME!

Russ - 11-26-2009 at 04:22 AM

kissme, You'll have fun on you're adventure. Two days of singing to yourself and watching the Baja go by. Don't worry about Dennis he missed his last visit with Dr. Giggles.
Welcome to our house of nuts. I like your name. It certainly got my attention.

tripledigitken - 11-26-2009 at 07:03 AM

Kissme,

You certainly have the Nomad spirit.

Travel daylight hours, keep you fuel tank half full at least, gas up at El Rosario heading south, eat at Taco Stands, drink a Pacifico under a Palapa, and take lots of pictures to share with us when you return. Have a great trip!

Great name for a company and/or a Nomad.

Peace, Love and fish tacos.

Thanks I needed that

Skeet/Loreto - 11-26-2009 at 07:29 AM

Kiss me Buck Tooth!, I am Thirsty!!

Seriously I suggest the following:
Take a Black Lab.
Stop in San Quintin at the Los Cirios Motel{One Block of the Main Road across from the Medical Center} Cheap and Safe.

At Guerrero Negro stay at Don Gus.

At Loreto the Hotel Junipero- across from the Mission.

In La Paz The Marina is Great but Expensive so try the Gardinia.

Have fun, Keep your eyes and ears open.

vandenberg - 11-26-2009 at 08:29 AM

Welcome to the board Kissmecarolyn.

As for owning a organic cosmetic company :?::?:... gives me visions of Marilyn Monroe bathing in V8 juice.

shari - 11-26-2009 at 08:37 AM

welcome to nomadlandia Kissme ....you will have a great trip and we look forward to hearing about it here. I travelled for many years alone and with my daughter and always had a blast.
sure could use some nice organic lip stuff....

wilderone - 11-26-2009 at 10:54 AM

Obey all the road signs - especially going through small towns. You dont want to give cops a reason to stop you.

Funny thing - I was riding with a couple girls who had never been to Baja, returning from Meling Ranch once. We were checking the map and I wondered aloud what town was coming up. Noting the sign, she replied, "I think it's Despacio."

Moral of the story, know what the Spanish signs mean.

mulegemichael - 11-26-2009 at 10:57 AM

kissme...roz and i have a large lavender business up north...google purple haze lavender for fun; might be something for your cosmetic business...and...we're certified organic.

next you'll be spewing garbage about supreme beings (jajajaja), lost kittens and DOPE!! pathetic

Bajahowodd - 11-26-2009 at 11:18 AM

Don Gus? Jeezo. Trying to scare her, Skeet?

My personal itinerary would be Jardines de Baja in San Quintin. Wonderful folks run it. Beautiful grounds. Great restaurant. In Guerreo Negro, either Cowboy, Caracoles, or Malarrimo. Won't go wrong with any of them. Loreto fave of mine is Hacienda Suites, although I know many on this forum will jump on me for that one. Hacienda Suites is first class, very much up to US standards, has a great retsaurant next door- Domingo's, and suffers from one glaring problem. It's nowhere near the historic district or the water.

kissmewillyou - 11-26-2009 at 01:14 PM

Are you guys always so rough one each other !!?? It's like a high school locker room here !! Mike and Roz the lavender idea sounds great I might just take you up on the offer thankyou guys !

It looks like I may have a girlfriend coming with me now so we'll be double trouble !

Keep up the good work nomads and Dennis, I see you've written 10 posts a day for 4 years - you must be one exciting dude when yr not drinking beer at yr desk !!

Aloha !

woody with a view - 11-26-2009 at 01:36 PM

if you can survive it here Baja will be easy. i like the high school reference tho!

If I kissed you my friend you would never be the Same, and if I took you Dancin you would be mine for LIFE!!!

The Don Gus is not Expensive.
If you do want a good Meal in Loreto the very best place is Domingo's.
Ask him to bring you a fresh Pepper with your Meal. He will bring you one of the Pepper Plants I gave him!!You can Pick you own.

Beachgirl - 11-26-2009 at 03:34 PM

Hi KissMe - Most of the Nomads throughout this site are wonderful, fun people with lots of seriously good advice.

Which border are you planning to cross? Mulegemichael and I always, and I mean always cross at Tecate, sleepy guards, easy, no hassle, ever. OK, maybe someone, somewhere has had a hassle, but we have never had one.

Early mornings can be brisk, so bring a fleece. Have a wonderful time. Bring a super good camera, USB cord to your 'puter, cause you will be shooting tons of photos to send back home. Be sure to hydrate (not just with cervezas). Send your trip plan to someone you trust. Most of all, just have a blast!

kissmewillyou - 11-26-2009 at 05:49 PM

Hey Beachgirl, yes Tecate seemed like the best one - so I guess thats the one we'll take. My friend lived in Oaxaca for 5 years - she worked in an Irish pub there (!!) and so speaks the lingo and knows how do deal with the sort of things im terrified of !! Though she did say that last time she went to Baja it was pretty backward compared with the mainland !!

I guess i'll soon find out !

kissmewillyou - 11-26-2009 at 06:13 PM

I've just read Surfer jim's 'Would you join again' thread

The guy's gotta point you know !!

I join the forum last night and within an hour am told to write 'DO ME' down the side of my car by a 'SELECT' nomad, quickly followed by rousing applause from an ELITE and then an ULTRA nomad...and I only asked if Baja was safe for a single woman !!

Long live travel, truth and kindness !

Almost like you been fishing but I gotta agree

mulegejim - 11-26-2009 at 06:45 PM

Kissme, most of the advise here has been very good - I think you can sort out the ones to not pay much attention to. Have a great time and check with Mike and Roz in Mulege - lots of great folks there, some of who don't often participate on this board who are, however, longtime Baja residents and great people.

Osprey - 11-26-2009 at 07:52 PM

Carolyn, you might wanna rethink how you jumped in. Why not start over with something like Bajacarolyn, leave your commercial venture as a separate piece of business. The world is full of ****s and princesses, heroins and wastrels. You gave very little latitude on your first post and you know it --- how could we know about or care about your commercial life/business. Spend a few minutes using the search function and see how we usually respond to new people who post here with names like Bajaharold, or Bajajulie.

Good point.
As I am often reminded (by Mrs Diver);
It is other's perceptions of your words/actions that matter, despite your/my intentions to the contrary.

Or on the other hand; who cares what the heck others think ?? :P

If it were me;
1. Get auto insurance and FMT
2. Cross at Tecate' in the morning
3. Stop at Jardines in San Quinton or BajaCactus in El Rosario
4. Stop in Mulege' - take up Mike and Ros on their generous offer
5. Do not travel at night
6. Use pesos from ATM machines for gas
7. Use common sense
8. Let BajaNomads know if you need help on the road;
you will then see the "real" BajaNomads

freakin' unbelievable.
The world's also full of truly wannabe fictional writers but we let them be ... we don't question them when they simply want pertinent information / insight into BAJA!! Isn't that what the forum is for??

From the horse's mouth, so to speak.

And you've gotta admit, Dennis' suggestion was funny and was what about 90% of the people first thought when they read your post.

And I don't know what to say about Skeeter - ever since he got that bi-pass all he talks about is dancing - and I don't think he means tripping the light fantastic if you get my drift.....

Baja is very different from much of the mainland, but then again Mexico is a very diverse country.

Do have a fun and safe trip--while we have a home in Baja, for travel,we prefer the mainland. But, there are great things to see and do in Baja.

Yeah, we're all pretty immature. but you seem to handle it well!! Let us know how your trip went.
Take a cooler to stock with drinks and ice. Be sure to get some fish tacos in Ensenada and Guerrero Negro; tamales at the big gas station on the highway near Jesus Maria. You're taking a good map, right?

Well, I didn't intend to ruffle your feathers quite as much as I did. I'm sorry for that but, I had a difficult time with your sincerity.
That said, allow me to give you some free advice. Baja is no place for a young lady alone if she exudes as much sexual innuendo as you. Flirtatious behavior will lead to nothing but trouble for you, possibly tragic.
I suggest you keep that in mind.

Have a great, safe trip.

ahhh yea ... your 'beliefs' really matter !!? please, a serious discussion /advice was seeked by baja's newest visitor. And you go offer advice like Don Gus? sheeez next

Bajahowodd - 11-27-2009 at 12:01 PM

First of all, as for the comment about Baja being backward versus the mainland, it depends upon where you are and from what perspective. If you end up in La Paz, you will be in a place that is anything but backward. It's a vibrant city.

That said, since Don Gus was resurrected on this thread, allow me to share why I wouldn't recommend it. Granted, last we stayed there was some five years ago, and since then a couple of newer hotels have opened (Cowboy, Caracoles). Anyway, we found Don Gus to be VERY basic as far as amenities, but what was surprising, was that on their 12 inch TV, they had a hard core porno channel. No kidding. Don't know if that was the result of pranksters, or what. Personally, I was not offended. However, I could understand how some might be. And, I would also wonder what specific clientele they aim for with this offering.

Skeet/Loreto - 11-27-2009 at 12:07 PM

I am really surpised. Virginia and I have stayed there several times since it opened. Never had any difficulties, Resonable and the Breakfast Menu was good.

When the malmarino got overloaded during Whale Season, we went there.

I understand, Skeet. Actually, when last we stayed at Don Gus, there were two van loads of whale watchers being put up there for the night by the tour operator. Maybe we just got lucky and had a "special" TV.

Either way, I do believe that Cowboy and Caracoles offer a superior experience.

Skeet/Loreto - 11-27-2009 at 01:43 PM

I agree that Cowboy and Caracoles is a little more Classy.
Skeet

Love it

This thread is great. Truly a pleasure to read some excellent recommendations peppered with the unique Nomad delivery. I love it - and kissme now knows that you guys (and gals) care and are concerned that she have a great trip to enjoy all that we enjoy when visiting Baja.

What the heck, even a dance with an old geezer like Skeet would contribute greatly to her experience in understanding who populates Baja.

Hopefully DK wont chime in and ruin all the fun.

All I know is I was very particular, very careful when I chose the handle "Osprey". I know better than to use a provocative name. Even down here, when I go to Cabo, San Jose or La Paz, just walking down the street, minding my own business, shopping, whatever, I can feel eyes, the hungry eyes of the young woman checking, assessing, wandering. You just have to be sooooo careful.

Hi. On a serious note, it takes about 6 hours to reach the border in Tecate from Phoenix. I park for like $5, walk across and get my tourist card at migracion (right above where they search the cars on the Mexican side), walk down the hill three blocks, wait in line at the Bancomer for an hour, pay, come back and get my card stamped.

Avoid this hassle by coming through on a Sunday; they'll tell you to "pay before you leave Mexico" because the bank is closed (it also closes at 4 PM daily).

Skeet has it right. Follow the signs for Ensenada, then the signs for San Quintin. In San Quintin, stay at Los Cirios on the left, 2 or three blocks from the highway, lit-up white sign with brown letters, 350 pesos. You know you went a little too far if you leave the divided highway in town, cross a bridge, and see all the mariscos stands.

Total drive day, including the bank: 11 hours.

If you fill up in Yuma, you can make it to Ensenada to fill up again. One of the hardest things a newbie has to decide is where to eat.

Have fun!
John

Just remember the speed limit is just a suggestion, except in the towns, then go the speed limit. I like to find a fast driver that passes me then follow him, at a 75 yard gap. He will get the ticket or the truck driver that is over the center line and you can speed up the boring parts. Don't drive at night especially on weekends. And ignore the bodies it's totally safe.

She's probably already on the road and about to cross the border
... or she got that picture she requested be u2u'd to her and bailed out on us.

She did seem really fun and a good sport. Maybe she'll come back and play some more.
