Suggestions for San Quintin

Wanderglobe - 4-5-2012 at 08:40 PM

Hey folks,

I'm in San Quintin for the next week and have a few outings planned. One to La Lobera at El Rosario, a trip to the Sierra San Pedro de Mártir Observatory and a days kayaking in the bay. As some of you know I'm working on a travel documentary on Baja California and I want to make it as interesting and informative as possible and not just about surf spots and fish tacos (no offense). I was wondering if anyone wanted to throw out any other interesting side trips that can be done during the day while I'm here. Many thanks in advance.

Scott

Being a vegetarian in Mexico is no laughing matter. :) Seriously, the last two days I've ordered breakfast "sin carne" and hidden in the mix was ham both times. They must think they know what's best for me. Wish I could have 'em sometimes.

huh!!!

Travel documentary. I'm trying to show people that there's more to Mexico than all inclusive resorts and that there's more to Baja than Cabo San Lucas and Tijuana.

oh,oh... de sur,,careful..SUN,FUN,BUN

Thanks David. That might just be worth the trip. Much appreciated. :)

Send a message to BajaGringo and get a guided tour of the abalone project, perhaps even a ride out to Isla San Martin.
San Quintin has a lot to offer, but not much of it is layed out for tourists.
It's a good thing that you're doing, there a lot of small mom and pop tourist related businesses in Baja that can use all the help they can get right now. We stopped in a little fish taco place just south of SQ. The couple that owns it was soo happy to have some customers that they came out front to greet us before we could get out of our truck.
They were very sweet, but obviously scared about the future of their restaurant.

I can relate to what you are saying in that I was a veggie for many years and broke my "fast" with fish tacos in San Felipe and never looked back. In fact i became a dedicated (crazed?) fisherman and 90% of what I eat now I caught- and killed- myself...no middle man. If you eat out in Baja you almost by default are eating meat in that kitchens there run on Knorr chicken stock...dont mean that to bum you out but it suddenly made more sense to me to eat what was local and fresh and that means fish most of the time (though I'm not a fan of using shark which I guess is common in tacos.) Good thing about San Quintin, Santo Tomas, and El Rosario areas is that there is lots of good produce and if you throw a chunk of fresh fish on top, what could be more natural?

Not meant as an argument or to change your mind but just my thoughts!

the most interesting thing in san q is the big agribusinesses and large migrant farm worker population that does the labor. but appears you only got a week of time to do advance research on your documentary, so doubtful you got time to get right intro to see interesting side of agribiz in san q.

also some big ranches and ranch communities around that area, but doubt you can find an intro in under a week.

You might try going to Posada Don Diego in Vincinte Gurerro (just north of San Q) and talk to Irene about things to see and write about, she and her family are a wealth of info.

Yes and Mision Santo Domingo (1775) is just 5 good miles east of Hwy. 1, north side of the big bridge north of Vicente Guerrero.

Photos of La Lobera and Santo Domingo in this page: http://vivabaja.com/1005/

Thanks. I'll probably pop out there for a bite in the coming days. Cheers.

Stop at Melings ranch and el Coyote ranch on the way up or down from the Observatory lots of history there.

Stayed here a few weeks ago. Free margie if you stay overnight in the RV park. People friendly, dog friendly, quiet, hot showers, great meal. Lots of birdsong at dusk and in the a.m. Night watchman on site.

if you want to do a drive on the beach. do this drive on a good low tide because you'll be able to see fishermen going for pismo clams. if you want to talk to them, or maybe buy some fresh clams, bring some beer, and pack of smokes, make the mexican hand gesture for "what's up dude", and you can to do a little interview.

driving south on the beach. access the beach from cielito lindo, and drive south to el socorro. you can get back to the hwy 1 from socorro.

Copy the following down on a shirt pocket size card in large block letters. It has proven to be almost infallible.

Por favor, mi desayuno o comida no puede incluir carne de res, cerdo, pollo, o carne de cualquier otro animal. Es mi religión.

Since you plan to go to the observatory, take a little side trip to Rancho El Coyote. It's about 6 mile off the paved road and is a working ranch that has rooms for rent and some of the best cooking you will find. Not all inclusive, bring your own beer if you want any, but a really special place to spend some quiet time in the hills. I believe they can arrange horseback riding.:tumble:

I met some missionaries here the other day who told me about that place as well. I'm heading back up to Calexico to get another camera and to have my bus looked at but then I'm coming straight back down here so I'll check it out. Thanks for the post.

There's an interesting article about the Indians from southern Mexico that have moved to the San Quintin valley to work in the fields. It's at SFGATE, the San Francisco Chronics website. My links never work, until someone fixes it.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?F=/e/a/1998/01/11/...
It would prolly be easier to do a search for San Quintin at the SFGate website.

I'm here right now. I never even asked if they had wifi until the gentleman who works here and owns the place with his family asked me a wifi question. Anyway, amazing place. Cold at night, fresh during the day and nothing to bother you but the sounds of birds and goats. Speaking of, had a good laugh at this young cow meandering around with the goat herd. He must have lost his way. One of the goats didn't take too kindly when an animal 5 times his size tried to mount him. I'll be here tonight but I may come back. It's lovely here. Thanks for all for the suggestions.

I would go wandering south of El Rosario into the desert......maybe check out Catavina. Would be an easy day excursion into a remote area of the Baja.

David K - 4-16-2012 at 09:48 AM

There is so much to see between El Rosario and Cataviña, it could make a book... and so many zoom past it all, when most are near the highway and 2WD is fine.

El Cardonal (Cardon forest)
Las Pintas (fossil grotto & petroglyphs)
Sauzalito (copper mine, ghost town)
San Fernando Velicata (Mission & Petroglyphs)
El Marmol (Onyx mine ghost town)
El Volcan (Cold water geyser, geology area)
Agua Dulce (Historic spring on El Camino Real)
La Virgen (Boulder area)
La Bocana (Archaeology site)
The Painted cave near Cataviña..
..and more!
