Huge cactus in Turkey

This huge cactus in outside the Antalya Archeological Museum which is around 2 hours away from our place in Alanya. There are enormous cacti everywhere along the coast, some of the biggest I have ever seen.

I asked ChatGPT to identify the cactus:

The cactus in your photo, growing up against a wall in Turkey (specifically Antalya, it seems), appears to be a Cereusspecies—most likely Cereus peruvianus (also known as Cereus repandus, or “Peruvian apple cactus”).

Key features that support this ID:
* Tall, columnar stems with multiple vertical ribs.
* Blue-green color with a waxy coating.
* Branching structure—Cereus species can grow in tree-like forms.
* Habit of growing along walls—common in cultivated settings where they're trained for display or structural support.
* Geographic adaptability—though native to South America, this cactus is widely cultivated in warm Mediterranean climates like coastal Turkey.

These cacti can grow very large and tall, which matches the scale of the plant in your photo. They’re often used ornamentally in public gardens and museum grounds, which would make sense for a city like Antalya with botanical and archaeological interest.

Looks like the two middle branches have reached their height limit.
