Mexicali

I will be crossing at Mexicali going south, this is my first time in Mexcali. Is it a good place to cross? Can you get tourist cards and pay at the border? What hours are they open and what is the best time to cross?

Steve,

We always cross at Mexicali West (old crossing in Calexico/Mexicali) when going south, because we like to shop at the Wal-Mart Super Center in Mexicali. Sometimes we need supplies at the Home Depot or Costco as well.

We've discovered after over 50 entries that the best time is between 6 and 8 a.m. Not sure why, but there are fewer "red lights" at the Mexican Customs.

It is possible to get your Tourist Cards (FMTs) there and they are open 24/7, but it's much nicer and less hectic to wait until San Felipe to get them--assuming you will be going through SF during regular business days and hours. You can also get the permits out at the SF Airport should the Migraci?n be closed in SF. Technically, you don't need your FMTs until you go south of SF anyway.

Have fun.
