Police in border city of Tijuana issue sling shots as army check their weapons

The Associated Press

TIJUANA, Mexico- The police department has issued about 60 slingshots to officers in the violent border city of Tijuana who have been patrolling unarmed for more than two weeks while soldiers check their weapons, officials said Monday.

Municipal police spokesman Fernando Bojorquez said the slingshots, along with bags of ballbearings, were given to officers patrolling areas of the city visited by tourists.

Tijuana's police force of 2,000 officers has been without guns since Jan. 5, but some patrol alongside armed state police.

President Felipe Calderon sent 3,300 soldiers and federal police to Tijuana at the beginning of January to hunt down drug gangs. The soldiers swept police stations and took officers' guns for inspection amid allegations by federal investigators that a corrupt network of officers supports smugglers who traffic drugs into the United States. They were still checking the weapons Monday.

About 100 police demonstarted outside Tijuana town hall on Monday demanding they are returned their guns.

"The arms are our tools for work," said officer Juan Manuel Nieves. "Do they want more police to be killed?"

More than 300 people were slain in Tijuana last year including 13 police officers.

Calderon, who took office on Dec. 1, has also sent mopre than 20,000 troops and soldiers to states that have been ravaged by drug violence.

If you check closely you will find that the original journalist on this story was the same one who requested information regarding bribes paid to TiJuana police officers.

The one and same Anna Cearley.

Now will the blame be placed on the organization that printed this article.

Losfrailes, I simply chose "Policeonline" as my source....
If you Google "Tijuana slingshots" you will get over 75 hits. Most from news outlets sourcing the AP Google: "Tijuana Slingshots"

I think thats cinical from them, pretending to be victims when in reality desarming them is the least the feds should do to them. They shouldnt forget that the reason they have been stripped of their weapons, is because the feds are investigating a good portion of them for participating in killings, kidnappings, and protecting the side they are supposed to catch. Acts like these just show theres no shame in the TJPD.

Those Policia have my sympathy and support. Wish 'em luck. Arming someone to deal with firearms by giving 'em a slingshot isn't funny. You better hope and pray that if you're in a life and death situation that those coming to your rescue are better armed.

 That is just to funny  Maybe they will learn a lesson and stop playing games.

Well at least when they shoot someone, no one will hear:lol::lol::lol:

You know I won't hang around TJ anytime soon and usually just drive right through it anyway.

I kind of feel tempted to outrun them with my four banger:lol::lol::lol:

You know for all the times they forced me to bribe their butt:coolup:

Anyway I hope they don't try to shoot criminals with rubberbands and paper clips. I am sorry people this is just to funny....

Hey, I had a wrist rocket slingshot once -- you can put somebody's eye out with one of those things. Seriously.

This is excellent. My wife and I can beat a hasty retreat with garbage can lids, at our next mordida encounter.

I was actually hoping for paintballs.

This will make for some interesting ballistics reports.....

Late Getting the News

The Tijuana Slingshot story FINALLY made the Cable News today and they've been playing it up for the "Laugh at Mexico" value. There must have been a REAL shortage of news events today, unlike yesterday, when they kept covering (complete with Helicopter video) a "spouting" Fire Hydrant that a truck had run into in Los Angeles.
